Knowledge Sutra for the day!

When your mind is not complaining and is responsible, courageous, confident and hollow and empty, you are inexplicably beautiful.
- Sri Sri Ravi Shankar

QnA with Sri Sri

Q: Did Om originate from silence, or did silence originate from Om? Which is the root, Om or nothingness?

Sri Sri Ravi Shankar: Om is the origin of everything. If it is called the origin of everything, how can Om originate from silence? Silence is absence of sound, but Om is beyond silence. All sounds come from silence, but Om is not a sound like all other sounds. Om is the very vibration of all existence, that is why it is called the sound of one hand clapping; Anahad. It is not something that happened with the clash of two hands. It is beyond space and beyond time, and is beyond words.

Om is the primordial vibration of Creation.

Q: These practices bring so much inner comfort. If I do a lot of practice, will it make me more happy?

Sri Sri Ravi Shankar: Don’t do too much of practice. Move ahead gradually. Do only as much as needed. Do that much to which your body gets accustomed to.

Wisdom Quote of the day

It is extremely important for an unfit person to meditate so that he becomes skilful. A skilled person also needs to meditate in order to maintain his skills. The abilities within us must not diminish. That is why a skilled person must also meditate every day.  - Sri Sri Ravi Shankar

If you want to progress on the spiritual path, you must put some barriers, for instance, tobacco.
Smoking was considered part of the culture some 35-40 years ago. Today, it is not the same.
We have been saying this for so many years and it has taken so long, and has cost so many millions of lives. So many lives would have been saved if there was no smoking.

No smoking, no drugs, no alcohol – put these barriers.

QnA with Sri Sri

Q: During meditation, what is the benefit of keeping our eyes open by just five to ten percent? In many statues and idols of Lord Buddha, He is often depicted with His eyes half-closed. Please tell us something about this.

Sri Sri Ravi Shankar: When we close our eyes, we drift into the world of our mind, our thoughts and emotions – which is called the Manorajya (literally meaning the kingdom of the mind). When our eyes are open, we are engaged in the outside world. So when you close your eyes only partially, then the mind neither gets stuck in the inner world of thoughts and emotions, nor does it get entangled in the outside world. Then the mind slowly settles down and comes to a state of rest. This is a very beneficial technique for those who close their eyes and drift off into the world of dreams. It is like asiddhaushadhi (a perfect medicine).

Q: When there is love, why suffering is also there in a relationship?

Sri Sri Ravi Shankar: Love with wisdom is bliss. Love without knowledge or wisdom is pain.

Wisdom Quote of the day

Just as nutritious food and exercise is necessary for the body, meditation is necessary for the soul. What is necessary for the intellect is listening and reading. What is necessary for the mind is singing and feeling. Feeling is strengthened through singing. Listening to music and singing purifies the feelings. Knowledge purifies the mind. In the same way meditation purifies the soul. - Sri Sri Ravi Shankar

Karma is not Forever

Subscribe to Guru Punch

Every karma has a time period and its result is only up to that time period, whether good to bad.

Good karma will affect you only for a certain period of time, and bad karma also can affect you only for a certain period of time; not forever.
So even the worst sinner, the moment he sits and his heart blossoms, and he comes into devotion and acknowledges the Divinity, he is already getting free from all the bad karma.

That is why Lord Krishna said in the Bhagavad Gita, that even if someone is wicked, when he turns to me with an unwavering mind, he should be considered as a good person, as a wise man; a saint.
Like how you treat a saint, that is how you should treat my devotee. Even if he might have done all rubbish in the past, it doesn't matter, because in the present, he is free.

Knowledge Sutra for the day!

The centre focus of our life is spiritual growth and peace, then all other things will be around that. Your first and foremost commitment in life is to be with the Truth, to evolve in Truth.
- Sri Sri Ravi Shankar

QnA with Sri Sri

Q: There are times when I feel close to the Divine, and other times when I feel the Divine so far away. Why this fluctuation?

Sri Sri Ravi Shankar: I think you have too much time sitting and thinking about yourself, whether your close or not. Get out and work for the world. Do something for the society. Keep yourself busy.
When you do seva, you get merit, and because of the merit, you can go deep in meditation. They are all connected. Everything is connected.

Guru One Liner of the day

Q: Is it possible for all of us to get enlightened?

Sri Sri Ravi Shankar: Definitely. Anytime! The seed is there. It can sprout anytime. It can become a big tree anytime.

Wisdom Quote of the day

Is all your work getting done? This is what grace is! Whoever comes on this path grace is always in abundance. - Sri Sri Ravi Shankar

Devotion

Devotion is a result - it happens. When an attraction becomes little difficult to attain, then love begins happen more. And when it becomes a little difficult to capture love, possess love then devotion starts happening. The blossoming of devotion is fullness of life. When devotion have flowered in you, every step is led by the Divine. -----Sri Sri

Don't Make a Mistake by Pointing out Mistakes

Subscribe to Guru Punch

What is the use of pointing out a person's mistake that they know they have committed?
By doing this, you will only make them feel more guilty, defensive or resentful, and this will only create more distance.

You should only point out the mistake of a person who does not know, but who wants to know.
Do not point out the mistake of a person who knows but doesn't want you to know. Often people know the mistakes that they have committed, but they do not want you to tell them.

Before pointing out the mistake of a person, see whether your comments in any way will help to improve the situation, foster love or bring harmony.

A magnanimous person would not pick on the mistakes of others and make them feel guilty. However, they would correct them with compassion and care, not through words but through attitudes.

Knowledge Sutra for the day!

Faith is the nature of an undivided mind, an undivided consciousness.
- Sri Sri Ravi Shankar

QnA with Sri Sri

Q: What is action in inaction and inaction in action?

Sri Sri Ravi Shankar: It is very clear. This is the whole secret.
When you are acting with hundred percent attention, something in you tells, ‘I am not doing it, I am not acting. It is just happening'. How many of you have had this experience? (Many in the audience raise their hands). This is seeing inaction in action.
Sometimes you get angry, or you behave in some manner and you feel that you are not doing it, it is happening. Someone comes in front of you and you just blow up, knowing very well that you are not doing it purposely. Something in that person triggers something in you, and you start behaving like that. How many of you have has this experience? (Many raise hands). You wonder, ‘My God, I never wanted to do this!’ That is seeing inaction in action.
You act because that person had to get those words, or that karma from you. So he just pulled out those words from you, and you never really wanted to say it. That incident had to happen and it was a karma. This is a little higher knowledge.
Now don’t try to apply this knowledge to every mistake you do. You yell at somebody and say, ‘I didn’t mean it. It was karmic and you had to get it, so I had to yell!’ This is misuse of knowledge. Don’t do that. Don’t misuse knowledge in that sense.
Sometimes without your wanting to do an act, you do it. You don't want to do it, but you feel helpless, and you are just watching the act happening.

You see that you are not doing it, yet an action is happening, this is seeing inaction in action. You are sitting with eyes closed and meditating. You are not doing anything, yet the vibration that you are generating from within you is changing the world. This is action in inaction.
You’re sitting and meditating, you’re spreading the waves of compassion, waves of pure love and devotion, waves of harmony, and that harmony is hitting others and it is changing their mind-set, it is changing the atmosphere, it is removing the negativity, it is making things more positive. You’re giving blessing to people. With your blessing things are changing. This is action in inaction. You sit in samadhi, you sit in deep meditation, that samadhi is definitely creating a lot of action in the world. That is action in inaction.
This is very difficult to explain. I have made an effort to explain it with whatever little examples.

I have a Problem

Subscribe to Guru Punch

Once a wise man drew a line on a board and told his student to make the line shorter without touching or erasing it.

How would you do it?
You have to shorten a line without touching it.
The intelligent student then drew a much longer line underneath that line. So, the line automatically became shorter.

The lesson here is that if your difficulties appear to be very big, lift your eyes, because you are only focused on yourself. If you lift your eyes up and look at those who are in a worse condition than you, you will suddenly feel that your burden is not as bad as you thought it was. If you think you have some big problem, look at people who have a greater problem. Suddenly, you will get a confidence that my problem is much smaller, and I can manage it.

Knowledge Sutra for the day!

Strength comes from wakefulness. In sattva, the wakeful state, there is knowledge and curiosity, there is something very lively - but there is no desire.
- Sri Sri Ravi Shankar

QnA with Sri Sri

Q: Does acquiring power and authority - professionally and spiritually, give one the power to misbehave with one’s parents at home? Do you approve of such people?

Sri Sri Ravi Shankar: No, not at all. Both the parents and the children need to understand and be careful in this situation.
For parents, I would advise them not to be overly strict with children. Remember what has been said in our scriptures. In the Nitishastra and Dharmashastra, it is said, when you child becomes 16 years old, you should be like a friend to them. So give some freedom to your children, and do not try to overly control them in everything that they do. But do not give too much freedom also. If you give them too much freedom, then in the future they will only blame you for their own conditions.
It is like this, if you hold the reins of a horse too tight, the horse will not be able to run. And if you keep it totally loose, then the horse will run wherever it wants to. So adopt the middle path here.

Have you Been Complaining Lately?

Subscribe to Guru Punch

It is okay for you to show your upset mood or tendency once in a while, but doing it over and over again is taxing for you and people you love.
Lovers often do this. They expend a lot of energy in cajoling and this brings down the joy and celebration of the moment.

If you feel down, appease and please yourself. Your need to be appeased by someone else is the sign of grossness. This is the root of ignorance. If you want attention, all you get is tension.

Meditation is the delicate art of doing nothing.
- Sri Sri Ravi Shankar

QnA with Sri Sri

Q: When love turns into bitterness, what to do?

Sri Sri Ravi Shankar: Just wait, don’t react, the bitterness will turn back into love again.
You often see that the people for whom you have done so much, they turn bitter! And you expect everyone to be in an enlightened state, that is not possible in the world. Everyone is not just going to be smiling and accepting you as you are, and unconditionally being in a giving and loving space. That is not possible. You will have to face reactions, and you should face it, that is all.

What is the Best Way to Deal with Any Kind of Injustice?

Subscribe to Guru Punch

Sometimes what you think as injustice may not be so from the other person’s point of view. It may not be injustice at all.

You need to stand up against injustice, but with wisdom and with awareness, because everyone who gets annoyed or angry they will always say, 'I am resisting the injustice'.

Behind the flame of anger, there is a cry for justice, or a demand for justice. But when you analyze, go deep into it, it may not be correct at all. It may not be right at all.
So that is why I would say, you should first analyze from a calm mind, and then take a stand against injustice.

Q: I am quite organized but my wife and daughter are totally opposite. This is one of the reasons I get annoyed at times. How do I correct them?

Sri Sri Ravi Shankar: That is okay, you should keep doing it so that they learn to be more organized. Otherwise there is no fun in life! Someone should lose temper, someone should cajole and pacify. Otherwise it will be so boring; eventless, juiceless, tasteless life. But don’t take it too far! Once in a while is okay.

Students are in Abundance, Disciples are a Few, But the Devotees are Rare

Subscribe to Guru Punch

It is nothing great to become God or be God. Whether you want or not, all are already Gods. A stone is also a God. You are also a God. Everything is God, God is already there, but it is great to become a devotee. Do you see this? Everything, whether you want it or not, is already God, but the love, devotion, has flowered somewhere. Where the devotion has flowered totally, the flower has blossomed, that is a devotee. Attraction is everywhere, love is somewhere, but devotion is again rare. Devotion is very beautiful. A student comes to a Master, Teacher, and Guru with tears in his eyes. There are so many problems, and when he leaves, he is carrying the same tears, but the quality of the tears is different, it is of gratitude. Still tears flow, but those are of gratitude, of love; it is so beautiful to cry in love.

One, who has cried even once in love, knows the taste of it, of surrender and of devotion and the entire creation rejoices it. The entire creation is longing for only one thing, the transformed tears, from salty tears to sweet tears.

QnA with Sri Sri

Q: The soul is eternal, pure and ancient, then how did it become deluded, that it does not know itself in its true nature?

Sri Sri Ravi Shankar: This is called Atiprashna, i.e., the question which does not really concern you, and it is too much to ask for.
So why did the first ignorance happen, these questions were never answered. In the scriptures also, it is said that this is Atiprashna.
What are you going to do knowing that? Even if someone will say, 'Okay, this happened two billion years ago', what is the use? What are you going to achieve, or solve by it?
There are many other things to know. First know who you are, and then you can say, how the first ignorance came.
