9 Yoga Tips to Overcome Anxiety and Stress

QnA with Sri Sri

Q: How do we feel the presence of God?

Sri Sri Ravi Shankar: God is that fundamental principle from which everything has come. He is that which upholds and sustains everything in creation, and He is also that into which everything dissolves into. And it is all happening every moment, everywhere.
So, in the same way, Lord Krishna says, ‘I am the source that governs everything in this creation, and it is through my very presence that everything happens’.
For example, a foetus in the womb of a mother. It is because of the presence of consciousness (Jiva or life force) within the foetus that causes it to grow. It is because of the presence of consciousness (Jiva) within a plant, or a trees that causes it to grow. Now this consciousness that is present within each living being is a witness to all that happens. It does nothing by itself, yet everything happens under its influence. Lord Krishna says, ‘Any transformation that you see, happens because of Me. I am the seed from which everything is born, and I am the cause of all changes’. After listening to this, what more proof do we need of the existence of God? Are creatures being born in this world or not? Every moment there is something being born. See how many living creatures and insects are being born every moment. Plants, trees, insects, animals, babies, all are being born every second.
Lord Krishna says, ‘My presence (as the Divine Consciousness governing everything) is the cause of living beings being born and coming into existence. It is My presence that sustains and upholds their existence. And it is My presence due to which they undergo all changes and ultimately die and disappear’. Now how can anyone or anything be separate from God? Do not be foolish in looking for God, or running behind Him. Wherever you are, just relax, and repose within yourself. That is where you will find Him. He is in you.
That which is not omnipresent cannot be called God. When He is present everywhere, is He not present in you? He belongs to everyone, so He belongs to me too. He is in me and He is all-capable. It is very important to remember that God is all-capable. He is capable of fulfilling all our desires and whatever we feel that we lack. He is capable of granting us all that we need. This is all that you have to believe in. So just believe this and relax.

What we need to understand is that we should know that we already have what we want in life. You start with this intention, ‘I already have what I want’, then what you want will fructify easily. Thinking, ‘I have it’, is like sowing a seed. Once you sow a seed, then you put water and manure and it will sprout and grow. So you know mentally that the seed is there. Same way, whatever you want to achieve in life, know that you are that and you have it. If you think, you don’t have it then only lack grows. - Sri Sri Ravi Shankar

One Divinity

Subscribe to Knowledge Sheet

You know, some people may ask, 'Why do Indians worship so many Gods and Goddesses?' This is wrong understanding. It is all one divinity, but to create that personal connection and deep oneness with it, people worship it in their own way, and that is why we have different forms and different names. Even when people are worshipping idols, they are not really worshipping the stone, rather they worship the divinity, just like how we keep pictures of our dear ones with us wherever we go.

We keep pictures of our children with us. They may not be with us but seeing that picture instantly brings that intense connection. The same is with an idol. An idol is kept simply to make that connection with the divine.

“Om SHanti Shanti”
It’s nice to be here with you all, with all Doctors and Care-givers. Besides being true to the spirit of caring for others, we all need to take care of ourselves also. I am happy that Prernaa program is being launched as a collaboration between the SAARC federation and the Art of Living. It is very essential today. There is a strict need for it today, and for a healthy and happy life, a lifestyle change should happen.

You know there is an article on this - have you read it? How many have you read this article that says that if you meditate for 8 weeks, the structure of your Brain changes and your grey cells increase, they replenish. There is another research that says that the anxiety level in today’s high school students is the same as the anxiety level that used to exist in asylum patients of the 1950s. Such is the stress level. This is alarming.

The other day, a 20 year old said to me that he is fed up of his life. Imagine a 20 yr ols saying that?! I ask how much of life have you seen anyways to say that?! So today’s children can’t be healthy. These days there is so much of Schizrophenia and Bi polar dieases happening! All becuase of stress..even such brilliant students are facing this issue. You all tell me, had you even heard of bipolar disease when you were young? how many of you even knew what it means??

What is the definition of stress? when you have lot to do and very little time and energy.
So either u reduce your workload or you increase your energy to complete it all - now reducing workload is not possible.. so better to incease energy. there are 4 ways to increase your energy level:

Food - these days ppl eat only carb, carbs and carbs..this gives only starch.. this is so unhealthy. Or if we eat vegetables we eat only potatoes, tomatoes, Baingan and pyaaz..So let us pledge to bring awareness about nutrition and healthy food
Sleep - how many of you face patients complaining of nightmares and little disturbed sleep?Sleep is a complete healer, works better than meds also.. there are so amny ypostures and yog nidra which can induce better sleep, without sleeping tablets.
Hygiene - we talk of 5Hs - Health, home for pepple, harmony in diversity, hugiene and human values.
Fresh Air - many people seal their windows in winters.  they keep it locked and there is no fresh air. Stale air in the rooms is the cause of many illnesses and diseases - it is very instrumental in causing cancer. Cancer patients are known to not be breathing enough, they hardly take any oxygen in., they can heal thmselves iwth Oxygen
Many cancer patients can do a little dietary change and heal themsleves. take fresh air in..

Then petro fumes and electro magnetic garbage also affects health.
then PPl sitting and watching TV for long hrs is also causing many illnesses. n US, Parents put their kids in front of the TV for 3 - 4 hrs and then do their work. this is causing Attention deficiency Disorder among kids.
So its time to reorient ourselves and honor our body, honor our mind (Claps)

No need to hold up pent up emotions. Pent up emotions like anger jealousy, greed, guilt are causing too much cancer.. its a by-prod.
See from a bigger perspective - there are 7 Bln people here and enuf opportunities for everyone. so why to t ake stres? See with eye of wisdom, drop away your worries and tensions and smile from the core of your being.

So follow the 2S - smile and serve (Smiles!)

When you see your problem is big, start seing others’ prob as big and yours as small - then automatically you’ll start getting the solution to your problem. So this needs a little training, we train for a little time on how to handle your own mind, your own emotions and your own lifestyle.

they all have to do it themeselves.

Questions and Answers summary:

To doctors: do not claim to heal more than what you can deliver and heal, to ensure that your credibility is not reduced. Substantiate your treatment with clinical researches. Use alternate therapies as a holistic approach. HAve an open mind and check on pre-post improvement.
A teacher’s 70 yr old father reversed his lung tumor with his rigourous willpower, faith and pranayaam by sadhana for 40 days non stop. It’s fine now, even the drs at Tata Memorial hospitals were astonished.
NIMHANS reasearch papers say that meditation and holistic lifestyle can enhance your immune system by 3 times.

the subtler you wil lgo, the more you will realise it’s all energy. If you see from the eyes of physics, you’ll realise that everything is only waves and vibration. Atoms don’t exist. Once a top quantum physicist said that after my 40 yrs of research on matter, I realised that there is no matter (laughter!!) So even blessings, thoughts, intentions manifest like that...Even in phyiology, it is all electro magnetic in nature.

Tobacco should be banned altogether, all religious and other places all over the country.

How to create a happy environment? At office, you all should ‘share a meal’ everyday. crack jokes and laugh, and then meditate after food for just 10-15 mins. In America, M&M is very famous, lets make M&M famous here also - Meal & Meditate (laughter!!)

See even World Bank has started it, infact, as we speak, WB is holding a talk for its top 120 mgmnt ppl. At home also, form a group for prayer. Get together and chant 12 shlokas, it immediately creates a diff atmosphere and creates instant bonding. Even singing creates immediate bonding, very strong.

Now we will do a new pranayaam today which will instantly hhelp you relax and destress..it is v helpful to high BP patients also..immediately it brings down your stress..DO it 5 times before meditating everyday...Breath in from your nose and breath ou very slwly from your mouth, almost through a straw in yur mouth...do it only 5 times..not more reqd

Handling Doubt

There are three kinds of doubt:
1.When we doubt ourselves
2.When we doubt the people around us, and
3.When we doubt God
We have never seen God, so there is always a doubt somewhere in our mind as to whether or not God exists.

We see everyone in society with an eye of suspicion. When we do not want people to see us with suspicion or doubt, then we also should not see them in the same way.
Now by saying this I do not mean that you should blindly trust everyone around with everything. Do not just hand over your purse or wallet to some stranger, or think that it is okay even if he runs away with it. That is not what I am saying, but we should become aware of what is going on in our mind. We must pay attention to this fact.

Until we improve ourselves, until we do not kindle happiness and love from within ourselves, how can there be peace and happiness in the society and the world at large?

No religion in the world preaches that you should hurt or injure another being. Then why is all this happening today? It is because religious education has not been imparted in a proper way to everyone. Today there is a need for spiritual education. Spiritual education is that which connects everybody together. There have been so many saints in time, and they have all had the same opinion – that everything is one. - Sri Sri Ravi Shankar

Q: How do we deal with constant blame, especially from a dear one?

Sri Sri Ravi Shankar: See, you get used to anything that is constant (Laughter). So don’t worry about it. If someone constantly keeps blaming you, then do not care about it. It happens so often, when mothers constantly blaming their children, the children stop caring about what their mother is saying. This is because they know she is going to continue the same behaviour every day, right? The trouble happens when someone who never complains suddenly complains. When someone who is never rude suddenly becomes rude, that bothers you more, isn’t it so?

Either you are eternalizing the problem, or you lack the skill to deal with what is happening. These are the only two aspects to it. So skilfully handle these situations and do not eternalize them. Everybody has a right to be a little imperfect. You should accept others’ imperfections and your own imperfections as well. When you do not accept peoples’ imperfections, you get angry. And when you do not accept your own imperfections you feel guilty and then you become angry at yourself. Both situations are not healthy and congenial for you. So, you need to keep a little space in life for imperfections, and just move on. Do not get stuck in the past.

Accept People as They Are

Subscribe to Knowledge Sheet

The first thing that we need to do is to accept people as they are.

How many people have you met in your lives who are exactly like you? Have you met anyone like that? You have not. Yet you want that everyone should think and act like you do. You know, if you meet someone who is exactly like you, then you will not be able to tolerate them for even five minutes. The truth is that it is very difficult to tolerate someone who thinks and behaves just like you. This is the very foundation principle of The Art of Living.

Just see, there is only Jesus in the world yet do you know how many sects of Christianity are there in the world today? There are 72 sects of Christianity in the world today. How many sects of Islam are there today? There are five well known ones – like Shias, Sunnis, Ahmediya, Sufi, etc. There was only one Lord Buddha, but there are 32 sects or traditions in Buddhism today. And you cannot even count the number of different sects and traditions in Hinduism (Laughter).

For every great saint that has been, there is a tradition and sect of his following. There are many schools of thought in Sikhism also. So as time progresses, different saints, different religious philosophies and schools of thought emerge. We must let all these diverse traditions and sects grow and develop. When one tries to make everyone behave and think in the same way, then the outcome is what we are seeing in countries like Syria, Egypt, etc. The conditions there are very unfortunate.

Q: It is said that one can get liberation by the knowledge of Panchanga (Indian Calendar). Please tell me what is this Panchanga?

Sri Sri Ravi Shankar: Panchanga refers to the motion of the planets and celestial bodies. Astrology itself is Panchanga (a tool used to determine and study the planetary positions and their effects upon an individual). Suppose you are angry at somebody, then you keep thinking, ‘Why did he do this to me?’ Now if you have knowledge of Jyotish (Vedic astrology) then you will understand that there is no fault of that man. You will think, ‘It happened because of some effects of the motion of some planets in my planetary chart. So I had to bear insult’. This is mukti (liberation). The mind which was entangled in Raga- Dwesha (cravings and aversions) with that person gets detached. Jyotish helps you understand that your time is bad; which is why even good people quarrel with you and if the time is good, even your sworn enemies help you in times of need. So when you understand this, then the Raga- Dwesha in your mind gets dissolved and mind becomes quiet.
What is Mukti? Suppose you drank a lot of water and you need to go to washroom to relieve yourself, but you are sitting in a meeting and are not able to go. When finally you go and come back, you feel relieved, as if to say, “Ah! I am finally liberated” (Laughter). So when some wedding or a party at home gets over and all the guests depart; you exclaim “Hai! Finally it’s over!” Is it not so?
Whenever you feel this “Hai!” (out of relaxation), just think of it as Mukti and when there is “Hai-tauba (out of chaos and confusion), think of it as bondage. When we are contented in life, that is jeevan-mukti (being liberated while stile living). It is a stage in which you feel – ‘I do not need anything more in this life. I am contented and I will serve others to the best of my capacity. This whole world is mine; all this is my reflection (of the Self) and my own nature.’ When you become so firmly established and strong in this knowledge from within, then contentment and joy dawns in you. All the complaints disappear. Everything becomes available even before the wish arises. Within no time, all the required knowledge comes to the mind. This all is called jeevan-mukti.

Narayan means what? That energy which is present in all the nervous systems, in all of creation. Anything that sparkles in living beings is called Narayan.

The word 'nervous system' comes from the Sanskrit word 'Nara', which also means 'human beings'.

Narayan means that which is housed in the beautiful and amazing nervous system. Just imagine a human being without a nervous system, he will not be alive. It is because of your nervous system that you are able to express yourself. That energy which perceives and which expresses in the whole universe is Narayan.

THURSDAY, NOVEMBER 27, 2014

Q: Can you please speak about the Manusmriti (Meaning “Laws of Manu”, referring to a text that expounds the code of laws & Dharma that should govern an individual and the society)? Is it relevant today?

Sri Sri Ravi Shankar: See, Manusmriti was written by a king called Manu. He was a very wise king. A few lines in the Manusmriti which talk about how women should always be protected or a little bit about caste system; these have been misinterpreted. I would say they might be interpolated (meaning: stretched too far). But this is not a scripture of the rishis. It is by a king, so it is like a Constitution. That is all. So the Manusmriti is not an authority for the Sanatan Dharma (Vedic name for Hindu Religion). We do not need to follow it. It is like a Constitution. Like the Indian Constitution, the people in those days also made certain rules. So at that time Manu made certain rules. But it is not a universal scripture and it is not necessary for everybody to follow. It is not applicable for everyone everywhere and for all times. It is not so at all.
But there are some very good things also mentioned in the Manusmriti. It has very good knowledge. So you should take that which is relevant today and leave the rest. Our people have been following this in our country. You should always look at all the scriptures in the world with reason, with wisdom. This is what scriptures also say. They say that you should keep the Desha (country or place) and the Kaala (time) in mind when you apply knowledge or a particular scripture. This is important. Why are there so many problems in the world today? It is because some people want to implement those scriptures today which are 2000 years old or maybe 1400 years old. But they are not applicable today at all. This is the whole problem in the Middle East. Some people want to impose those rules which are not applicable for today’s time. It had relevance at that time but they are no longer relevant.

Q: What is the significance of applying tilak on the forehead (referring to the portion of the forehead between the eyebrows)? What does it represent? Married women in our country also apply the tilak. What is the reason behind it?

Sri Sri Ravi Shankar: The third eye is present there (referring to the center associated with alertness or awareness). So there is a custom of applying sandal paste or other things at the location of pineal and pituitary glands which have a great effect on our body and mind. One reason for applying the paste is to give respect to that portion of the forehead. It stimulates our attention.
Whenever you think, what do you do? Your hand automatically goes at this place. When you make a mistake, your hand goes at the head. When you think or deeply ponder over something or some problem comes then too you keep your hand like this. If you go to any country or any corner of the world, you find that everywhere people think like this. This is the seat of wisdom. It is the peetha (seat) of knowledge. That is why chandan (sandal paste), kumkum or sindoor (vermillion powder) is applied there. It is symbolic.

Put Your Effort and Give Up

Subscribe to Knowledge Sheet

In the field you throw so many seeds. Not all seeds sprout. Some sprout, some don’t. When you sow saplings, not every sapling grows. Some do, some don’t. In a tree, not all flowers become fruit. Some fall when they are not even ripe. That’s why you put your effort and then you give up (here meaning surrender).

Giving up without putting any effort is foolishness and after putting all your effort, not giving up is also foolishness. Put all your effort and give up. Not putting all your effort and giving up is also foolishness.

What makes you free? Putting your effort and giving up makes you free. If you say, 'I give up', without putting effort, it doesn’t make you free. You say, 'I give up', but you have not really given up because of that tendency of wanting to do. That will hold you back from being free. The secret of freedom is, put your effort and give up.
Not putting your effort and giving up doesn’t free you. And, putting all your effort and not giving up will also not free you.

Any action should only be done with awareness. An action from an unaware state has no meaning. Then it’s not called effort.

All Possibilities

Subscribe to Knowledge Sheet

There are three components in life:
  1. Effort. Without your self-effort, nothing happens. So you have to put your effort. Will everything happen only through your effort? No. You make an effort and sow a mango sapling today and you want the fruit of it tomorrow, it is not going to give you the fruits tomorrow. It will take its time.
  2. That is the second aspect: time. Everything has a right time.
Similarly, even for acting there is a right time. Suppose in winter you sow a mango sapling and then you say, ‘Oh, nothing has sprouted’, it is not going to sprout now, unless it is in a green house. There is a right time to act and a right time to receive the fruit of action as well. So, time is the second factor.
  3. The next factor is a higher power or grace; that of all possibilities.
You should always keep room for possibilities; give miracles a chance. Logically you may think that something is impossible, but many times it becomes possible. How many of you have had this experience? A gift from the higher power is that of all possibilities.

Mistakes keep happening on this planet. You cannot stop mistakes from happening. It will continue to happen, and has been happening through the ages. When you do not want a particular person to commit a mistake because you see them as a part of you, when you see them suffering and you feel that they should come out of it because it is not good for them, then you guide them out of it. - Sri Sri Ravi Shankar

Q: Guru Gobind Singh was a warrior. Can a saint also be a warrior?

Sri Sri Ravi Shankar: Absolutely! Saints used to be warriors. Vishwamitra, Parshuram, etc. There are so many Rishis in Shrimad Bhagvatam who were warriors. Guru Gobindji raised this slogan, 'Sant sipahi bano' (a saint should become warrior). In fact only a saint should be a warrior. If someone whose heart is clean becomes a warrior, then good will happen for everyone. If an angry, greedy, arrogant person becomes a warrior, then he will just mess up.

Mahatma Gandhi is also in that category, he was a saint as well as a warrior. In each one of us there is a saint and a soldier, wake them up, it is time. There is an opportunity in India, in 2014, to be a sant sipahi (saint who is a soldier). Wake up the lion asleep in you. India has fallen, in every way it has fallen. In the world of spirituality also, strange things are being heard. Too much degradation. You should stand up for that.

Q: Are you right or left handed?

Sri Sri Ravi Shankar: I handle everything in the right manner. I suppose I don’t leave anything, so there is nothing left behind. So there’s nothing left and I suppose I’m right.

Meat Industry - Is it violence?

Subscribe to Knowledge Sheet

Meat industry, I would say is outdated now because people have started understanding how our whole system is made for vegetarian food. We are herbivorous because our immediate ancestors, apes are vegetarians. Monkeys, cows, zebras are vegetarian. Most of the domestic animals are vegetarian and our system is made for vegetarian food.

Personally, if you see the way the animals are tortured to make food for you and you look into their eyes, nobody will touch that food because we all have a human heart, compassion and sensibility. The meat industry keeps unaware of how it is produced and they only give you the meat to consume it. But once you see how it is produced and how much torture the animal undergoes, you will abstain from it. Today with the growth of natural food, people have changed their preferences. In North America, a large section of the population has found health in vegetarian food.

When there is an attitude to give and hesitation to take or to ask, then the direction of life has reached an elevated level. If there is hesitation to give and no shame in taking then that comparatively is of a lower level of existence. And there are some people who even go to the extent of pouncing, grabbing and seizing which is an even lower level of existence. - Sri Sri Ravi Shankar

Q: In the Bhagavad Gita Lord Krishna says that among the months of the year I am the Margashirsha month (corresponding to the period from the third week of November to the third week of December). Please explain.

Sri Sri Ravi Shankar: See, in our country, every month of the calendar has been associated with some event and so each month has its own importance. There is also a special month called the Purushottama Maasa (literally meaning the month of Lord Vishnu) that is considered very special and important by the devotees of Lord Vishnu.
Devotees of Lord Shiva consider Shraavan to be most important. Devotees of the Mother Divine consider the months of Chaitra and Sharad (autumn) to be important. The festival of Navaratri is celebrated in the month of Sharad. So every month has its own significance and importance.
In our country we do not have a single school of thought or tradition when it comes to spirituality. There are so many sacred Puranas and scriptures, and each scripture prescribes something different and unique for each month of the year. But the essence of it all is that one should honour Time and give it due importance. Do not waste it unnecessarily on eating and drinking, or in useless gossip. The message is that Time is sacred. Consider time as a Prasaad (a sacred offering) from the Divine.

Impact of Spraying Insecticide on Karma

Subscribe to Knowledge Sheet

Don’t worry, you can kill a mosquito, no problem! You see, violence is the act that you do with anger or some selfish goal. When animals prey for their food, it is not called violence. They are just doing their dharma. Similarly in your body every day, millions of bacteria are dying. It is happening as a phenomenon inside of you, otherwise you cannot survive. The moment a harmful bacteria enters your body, all your white blood cells attack and finish it, and that is how you get a cold. What is done for survival or safety is not called violence.

Violence is the act done with negative emotions like anger, jealousy, hatred, greed, arrogance. Otherwise, when you breathe in and breathe out, you are killing many germs, does that means you should stop breathing?

When you take a shower, many bacteria are dying, does it mean you are killing them? There is a sect on the planet that don’t take bath because they think they are killing the bacteria. They don’t get into the water. They simply wipe their body with a towel. I think that is foolish.

Nature is pouring water and giving you rain. Every animal in the forest takes a shower the whole season. So bacteria, mites, insects are dying, but if it is done for the sake of survival, it is not violence. Only when it is done with negative emotions, it is violence. That is why Krishna says in the Bhagavad Gita, 'You are only doing your duty. It is not a sin. Don’t worry. Even if you are doing a sin, I am there to take away your sin. I will set you free. You be happy. You do your duty and be at peace'. This is the essence of the Gita.
