8 New Year Resolutions for Yoga Seekers
Resolve to evolve this new year!
Yoga has been a boon to mankind since its inception around 5,000 years ago. We have witnessed tremendous growth in the world of yoga with the western hemisphere accepting it as a phenomenon and not a cult.
Most of us who know the importance of yoga may already have it on our resolution list for this New Year. For them, yoga is a lifestyle and not a mere practice. It is not only about yoga poses but also about the philosophy of life.
For these sincere yoga seekers, we bring the 8 best resolutions for the New Year:
1.Try something different: For a yogi, getting into regular yoga poses is like getting out of the bed and brushing teeth. Try out some different postures this New Year. This will not only expand your list of yoga poses but also take your body by surprise as you get into the more challenging postures which will test your body to a great extent.
2.Turn to veggies: One resolution which yogis can try this New Year is to turn to vegetarian food. It is light on the stomach and easy to digest. As you like going deeper in your practices, turning vegetarian might act as a catalyst.
3.Make pranayama a part of the practice: Yoga practices are incomplete without pranayamas. For, different pranayamas have different effects on the body and can help deepen your experience. They are also an effective tool to go deeper into meditation.
4. Practice what yoga preaches: The philosophy of yoga encourages you to be wise, speak the truth, be one with nature, practice ahimsaor non-violence and non-cruelty. When we take a resolution to apply this philosophy in our daily lives, the planet would blossom with more and more beautiful people.
The yoga philosophy also encourages oneness, human values and service to the mankind. If you know more yogis in your area, you can come together and take up a service project of educating someone over the weekend or cleaning the neighborhood, for instance.
5.Introduce yoga to your nearsand dears: Take a resolve to introduce yoga to at least four to five people this year. Wouldn’t you like to share the joy that yoga brought you with the outer world? Spread the awareness about yoga to people you know and let everyone reap the benefits you did.
6.Read the Patanjali Yoga Sutra: The ultimate knowledge for yogis as it covers the complete philosophy of yoga in a nutshell. Right from how a human should be when in school to its death bed. You should surely make it a point to read/listen to minimum one sutra (principle) every day this New Year. These are the wisdom sutras which when practiced in everyday living can make your life a cakewalk.
7.Yogis like green: As the philosophy preaches being one with the nature, yogis find themselves close to the nature. Let planting a tree or saving electricity or conserving water be one of your resolutions this year. When you turn back and look, you should be satisfied with your deeds, leaving a good place to breathe for the generations to come.
8.Meditate: It brings the best out of you, makes you wiser, sharpens your intellect, improves memory and energizes you to face the everyday challenges of life. Meditate for yourself and see all this happen! The magic of going inside deep in meditation, being one with yourself, exploring yourself, knowing yourself, and coming out of meditation fresh as a daisy can only be experienced.
Let’s all come together and make this world a better place to live in. I have done my bit by creating awareness, by encouraging yogis like you to take up these resolutions so that when you look back at this year in December, you have something to smile about.

FEAR OF OTHER PEOPLE'S OPINION?
Don't give too much importance to what others think, what others say because it has no basis. They just vanish in no time like bubbles in the air.
Why do we give so much importance to what people think? People who you think are great friends, how much time will it take for them to turn against you? Hasn't it happened? You have done so much for people and they have turned against you. How many of you have this experience? For no reason, they became your enemy. You wonder one fine day what happened to this guy, what happened to this lady? You can't find logic. You search for a reason why they have gone against you, and you can't find one.
Similarly, someone who you did not know come to your help. Hasn't this happened? All this happens on its own law. If your time is good, even enemies behave like friends, and if your time is not good, it can happen the other way around. So remember you are like the spider. You weave your world around yourself. When you move with this conviction, everything falls in place.

Q: Can we live without eating?
Sri Sri Ravi Shankar: Little food you must have. Even I’m eating little.
There are people living on prana, I have seen them but they don’t look so bright. I have met not one or two, but several people who are just not eating at all.
There is one gentleman on whom they did many experiments in America. This man just does sun gazing and does not eat food. But time to time he has some tea with 4 to 5 spoonfuls of sugar.
But I was not so inspired to try it. They don’t look robust. Not enough vibrant prana or personality. So I did not try.
I do fast. I fast for some days and I’ve done it in the past also. You can do it but I don’t advice that. You have to be in isolation, silence, with no activity, then you can fast for a couple of days.
I don’t advice that (fasting) without some juice or some fruits. One must take something. Not just live on prana.
If we were supposed to live like that, then why did God make the liver and pancreas, and all the enzymes in the body? He would have just made it such that you only breath all over. All hollow and empty. The fact that we have all these organs is that they need to be put to use, but not over use. We are experts in either shutting it down or over using it. Both are wrong. Moderation. Eat a little bit, minimum, that is good enough.

Helping Children to Come out of Stress
We have special programs for schools, and it has worked magic. I want to quote one incident in Chicago, USA. One district school had 260 incidents of violence in a year, after the program, it came down to 62. And in the second year, it came down further to 20. So it is very important for children to learn the value of non-violence, non-aggression, friendliness and co-operation. And we have programs designed just for this. We are very happy to share this with you. Such programs are held for thousands of children everywhere because it is important for them to learn how to handle negativity.
Neither at school nor at home does anyone teach us how to handle our negative emotion. Getting angry, jealous, frustrated is natural. When these negative feelings come up, who teaches us how to handle our mind? When we don't know how to handle these emotions, the pressure builds up and builds up and then shows itself as violence. Sometimes people become so disruptive that they turn schizophrenic. Children who are brilliant, by the age of 17-18 years, they get bipolar and schizophrenic diseases. So we need to educate them on how to handle their negative emotions, how to handle their own mind and be friendly with everybody.
In a classroom if you ask a child, how many friends do you have, they say three, or four, or five. I ask them a question. In a school of 5000 children, if you are not being friendly with 50 kids, then how are you going to be friendly with 7 billion people in the world? So we have not taught children the value of friendliness; how to be friendly with everyone around.
We have some programs where we tell them to make one new friend every day.

QNA WITH SRI SRI
SATURDAY, DECEMBER 26, 2015
Q: How can I connect more and more to the divine in myself? Do I need many lifetimes?
Sri Sri Ravi Shankar: Just relax, you are already connected. You just have to wake up and see this, that's all! Just relax. In the Bible also there is a saying, "Be still and know that I am God".
You are in space, right? Do you have to look for space? What do you need to understand? I am in space. You don't have to keep repeating, "I am in space, I am in space".
So you are in Germany, you know it and that's it. You don't have to wake up every morning and say, "I am in Germany, I am in Germany" (laughter). You may land up in mental hospital maybe within Germany or across the border in Strasbourg! Some things you should simply accept and assume. How can that happen? When you have total relaxation, when you don't do anything. When you do nothing, that is when you tap into the source of energy. And later on, when you do any action, just be spontaneous.
If you don't get this now, never mind, because as long as there is a lot of rajas (tendency to act) in the system, you won’t understand this. That's why I would say, just meditate, relax and keep alive this passion to be connected and that will take you forward step by step.
You have to have patience. Don't be in a hurry. If someone says, "I am going to connect you today", never do that. Say, "Okay, thank you. It’s not an emergency sort of thing".
When you sit still and meditate, know that you are in that space. You can't be there forever and so you come out and act. Be dynamic in your activity. Of course, these two are conflicting, but a time comes when that state of consciousness continues for you, even in your activity. Anything you do, you won’t lose that state, anything you do, it will be there all the time. But this takes its own time.

BE LIKE A CHRISTMAS TREE
The Christmas tree is telling you, ‘Be like a Christmas tree - evergreen’. Whether in winter or summer, fall or spring, the Christmas tree remains the same. At the time of year when no tree bears anything, the Christmas tree has many gifts to offer and it is evergreen throughout. In life, in every situation, keep yourself green!
A Christmas tree bears the gifts and the lights not for itself, but for everybody. The gifts you are carrying in your life are for others. All your talents, all that you have been bestowed with, is for everyone. So serve, smile and celebrate! Whoever comes to you, offer them your gifts. When you offer the gift of service to anyone one in need, you will be amazed at how well your own needs are taken care of!
Like the Christmas tree that is pointing upwards and growing on all sides, we all have that capacity to blossom to the full human potential.
With regular meditation attain the qualities of the Christmas Tree - an evergreen smile, sharp focus like its sharp leaves, a perfect balance and the full potential of human life.

QNA WITH SRI SRI
FRIDAY, DECEMBER 25, 2015
Q: Please give your special message for ‘Christmas’.
Sri Sri Ravi Shankar: The Christmas tree is pointing upwards and its branches grow on all sides, and we all have that capacity to blossom to the fullest of the human potential. At the time of year when no tree bears anything, the Christmas tree has many gifts to offer and it is evergreen throughout the year. A Christmas tree bears the gifts and the lights not for itself, but for all. The gifts you are carrying in your life are for others. You offer the gift of service to anyone one in need, and you will wonder how your needs are being taken care of!
In the Bible, Jesus said, 'Unless you become like a child, you cannot get into the kingdom of heaven.' The whole world is one family, so it is necessary that we live with naturalness and simplicity; only then life blossoms. The second thing is, the wall that we erect between ourselves and others needs to be demolished. Drop all inhibitions between you and others. From your side you drop inhibitions. Go on and shake hands. This is what kids do. However, as we grow up, we tend to lose that. We create a wall between us. We bring formalities between us and forget our naturalness.
All those who are grown up physically, but want to be a child again, or think you are one, just go for it! Don't worry about what others think about you. If the world calls us crazy, let them say, but you be happy. Be in the present and be natural. What is most important in the world is innocence along with intelligence. The innocence of an ignorant person has no value. Similarly the crookedness of an intelligent person has no value. What is most valuable is innocence and intelligence. Innocence and intelligence should go together.
