The Perfect Relationship

If you know how to row a boat, you can row any boat. But if you don’t know how to row, changing boats isn’t going to help.
Similarly, changing a relationship does not solve the issue. Sooner or later, you will be in the same situation in any other relationship.

Most people look elsewhere for a perfect relationship, but few look within themselves;at the place from where we relate. What is your relationship with yourself? Who are you to yourself?
People think, ‘Oh, I’m single. I’m so bored being by myself. I need a companion. I need a relationship.’ If you are so bored by your own company, think how much more boring you must be for someone else. And two people bored with themselves getting together, will completely bore each other!

If your relationship is based on personal need it may not last that long. Once the need is fulfilled, on a physical or on an emotional level, the mind will look for something else and go somewhere else. If your relationship is from a level of sharing, then it can last longer.

When you’re looking for security, love, and comfort from your partner, you become weak. When you are weak, all the negative emotions come up and you become demanding. Demand destroys love. If we just know this one thing, we can save our love from getting rotten.

It’s the limited awareness of yourself and the limited experience of love that encapsulates you in a tiny compartment where you start suffocating. We can’t even handle the love we are asking for because we have never probed into the depth of our own mind; our own consciousness.

QUESTION & ANSWER WITH GURUDEV

Q: Gurudev, why do we call Ganesha - Ekadanta?
Sri Sri Ravi Shankar:

Often, people have two tendencies, one for themselves and another for others. An elephant also has two tusks, one for showing and the other for chewing. It never shows the one it uses for chewing, and it never uses the one it shows for chewing. Similarly, people have two tendencies, they do not show who they are and they are not what they show. But Ganesha is not like that, it is Ekdanta, which has many meanings; danta means the one who gives, he is the only daata, giver. Ekadanta can also also mean someone who has one target, lakshya, and one face. All these qualities are focused into one, ekadanta.

QUESTION & ANSWER WITH GURUDEV

Q: Gurudev, I always feel that I have received more than I deserve, and I feel uncomfortable..
Sri Sri Ravi Shankar:

You should feel comfortable. When you feel you have received more than you deserve, you become grateful, you feel life is a gift to you. When you feel that you really deserve this, then you become arrogant, dominant, rude, and rough. It is only when you realize that you are not worthy of what you have received and what you are receiving, then you become humble and more grateful! The more grateful you are, the higher you go; humility in you takes you high.

Faith and Devotion

Faith is the subject of head. Devotion is the subject of heart. And meditation is of both and connects both.

A mature intellect is devoted. A mature heart is full of knowledge. And meditation matures your intellect as well as your heart.

Mr. John Pb: But people with good intellect seem to have less faith.

Sri Sri: They have more faith in the matter. Head puts the faith in the matter more and heart puts the faith in the abstract more.

It's next to impossible that one can be in total lack of faith or total lack of devotion. It's only a question of balance.

Advice from Hawaii
What type of time do you give the Divine? Usually you give the time that is leftover, when you have nothing else to do, when no guests are coming, there are no parties to go to, no nice movies to watch, no weddings to attend. Such time you give. This is not quality time.
Give quality time to the Divine. It will be rewarded. If your prayers are not answered it is because you have never given quality time. Give Satsang and meditation your highest priority. Give prime time to the Divine. You definitely will be rewarded.

Q: Gurudev, how to keep the spine erect during meditation?
Sri Sri Ravi Shankar:

Make a start with the spine being erect, then if the head comes down, the back bends, don’t bother about it. You cannot start meditation in a sleeping posture, because then you will be snoring very soon. So sit down, and start with the spine erect when you meditate, and then let go, let it happen.

There is a song in Kannada which has a very profound meaning. When you are in a garden, in the midst of flowers, then the state of your mind is completely different. If you are in the midst of people, your state of mind is very different - sometimes the emotions of passion, anger, hatred come up. But when you are in the garden, amongst flowers, such emotions will not come up; there will be no feelings of jealousy, no emotional upheaval, nothing of the sort. But if you are in the midst of people, then definitely all this will happen. However good your friends are, when you spend time with people, something or the other comes up. You cannot always live in the midst of people, nor can you live alone in a garden.

Sometimes you have to spend time dreaming, and sometimes you have to listen to music, you cannot be in one state. There are people who work all the time, doing accounts or something or the other. The radio may be playing in the background but they do not pay attention to it; they keep thinking of something else. This is being in an imbalanced state. Who is a balanced person? A person who is sometimes in music, sometimes working; such a person thinks like a scientist, and looks at the world in a scientific manner; sometimes enjoys music, sometimes science and art. You must spend your life in both these streams.

Sometimes you must live in the world, and sometimes in silence. Go with these two and you will experience Brahman. You cannot run away from your responsibilities and go to the Himalayas, or stay in the worldly aspects all the time; you must strike a balance between both and experience the Brahman within you.

Divine is all Celebration

A poor man celebrates the new year once a year. A rich man celebrates each day. But the richest man celebrates every moment.

How rich are you? Do you celebrate once a year? Once a month? Every day? If you celebrate every moment, you are the Lord of Creation.

Review the year while you celebrate. This is your homework. What did you do? What did you achieve? How useful were you this past year? Sit for an hour and think about every week, one minute per week, and see the year's growth in less than an hour. With a flower, on New Year's Day, offer the whole year to the Divine.

QUESTION & ANSWER WITH GURUDEV
POSTED ON: THURSDAY, AUGUST 29, 2019

Q: Gurudev, is there a secret to relationships? How can I improve my relationship with my spouse?
Sri Sri Ravi Shankar:

Well, you’re asking the wrong person. I have no experience in this. But still I would say, you need to accept the differences, and not insist on others changing to your way at once. You can only suggest your way to others, but not insist on it with your spouse.

I usually say there are four secrets to a successful relationship:
1. A woman should never step on the ego of a man - this is very important. A woman should always pump the ego of the man.
2. A man should not step on the emotions of a woman. He should always nurture the emotions of the woman.
3. Both of them should not ask each other, “Do you really love me?” Stop asking, “Do you really love me?” Or complaining, “You don’t love me these days, you don’t pay attention to me". Don’t put the burden of proof on your beloved. They shouldn’t feel burdened to establish their love for you.
4. You be you. Walk your way, with a goal in hand. Otherwise, if you’re focusing your attention on policing your spouse, you’re going to spoil the relationship. This is what happens. You love someone very much, you want to know everything about them and you start policing them, and start asking them a million questions. And they get sick and tired of it, feel strangled and say bye to you.
It’s not just some misunderstanding. It’s too much expression of one’s love, or possessiveness which is like a burden on the spouse. You should give some breathing space to each other.
Take it for granted that there is understanding. Don’t question each other’s love or understanding. This is very important.
