Settling the Mind
There is a story of Lord Buddha.
Buddha was walking with his devotees and disciples. He wanted some water and there was a pond, but just then a buffalo entered the pond and got out of the pond and stirred the whole thing, and so the clean water became muddy water. So Buddha wanted some water from the pond, but his devotees said it has become dirty; we will find some other pond further. Buddha smiled at them and kept walking.
There was no other pond further, then Buddha said, ‘Go back and get the water from the same pond’. The devotees said, ‘No, it’s dirty’. Buddha said, 'Now you go check’.
When they went back, the water had settled and they could take the water. When the water was taken in a cup, it settled down even further and clear water was on the top.
Buddha then said, ‘Mind is like this. If the mind is in a mess, wait for a while, it will settle’.
Leave the mind for a little time and it will settle. It cannot be disturbed forever. All these disturbances are momentary. Just how it has come, it will go.
Every disturbance is momentary. So nothing to be done, just give it a little time, wait, and it will settle.
That’s the same with everything in life, sometimes you have to learn to be with it and allow it to settle. If you are in a hurry for the water in the pond to settle, it won’t settle, it will get dirtier.

In any relationship, be a giver of strength. This you can do only when you are strong. When you are emotionally dependent on somebody and you keep asking them if they really love you, even if they had any love, it will just drain away. - Sri Sri Ravi Shankar

Q: In Russia, when it is very cold, meditation is better. Is there a connection between temperature and meditation? I have heard that many Rishis meditate in the snow in the Himalayas.
Sri Sri Ravi Shankar: Of course, when it is cool, it is better for meditation and that is why they used to go into caves where it cooler, and not in the scorching heat. But, there are techniques and methods to do in hot climates as well. There are pranayamas you can do in warmer climates. Sheetali and sheetkari pranayama are there (to cool the system in hot weather).
You know, the ‘hot yoga’ has become quite popular in the west for some time, but I would not recommend you to do all that. I would say that you should do it in an air-conditioned room and that is good enough. Of course, this gives you temporary relief if you do in hot climate but its repercussions on your nervous system has to be studied scientifically. Before this, we cannot advise people to do asanas and pranayamas in 40 degree celsius temperatures. Cooler places are definitely more congenial.
If you see, a wild forest in the Arctic area where it is cooler, the trees grow in an orderly manner when compared to a forest in a tropical country. Have you noticed that the branches and trees? The shapes are all very orderly. So the temperature reduces and the entropy also reduces. That means more orderliness comes up. It is the same for plants, human beings and animals.

Q: Should I quit the membership of the church? (I belong to a Catholic Church).
Sri Sri Ravi Shankar: That is your choice you can continue to be a member or if you do not feel like it, you can quit. It is your own choice. The issue is not whether you are a member or not.

WISDOM QUOTE OF THE DAY

You have become so tired by doing something or the other all the time. Now just sit down for some time and be with yourself. Do some meditation. When you meditate, you will start seeing a new world in front of you. You get deep rest in meditation. You get rest when you are content, and this rest is what gives rise to Happiness. - Sri Sri Ravi Shankar

Expressing Love the Right Way
...
Love and admiration too can become a burden. When this happens, people try to unburden themselves by running away from it. Many love marriages have fallen apart because of this only. One partner expresses too much love towards the other, and the other is not able to handle it. The other person then feels like running away. And they do run away!
How many people have seen this happen? (Many raise their hands) We shouldn't talk too much about love because it is inexpressible, actually!
I feel that we should take a middle path; express a little, but not too much. Do express, but you don’t express so much that you start with, ‘I can’t live without you’, and then later you say, ‘I can’t stand you.’

Q: I have told my boss that I have faith in the Bhagavad Gita. So, when I work for him, I work without expecting any fruits for my actions. Since then my boss has stopped paying my salary. What should I do? Was that a mistake?
Sri Sri Ravi Shankar: I don’t think it was because of the Bhagavad Gita. You may not have worked properly! You might have been chanting in your work place, or did not work at all. I have to hear the other side of the story as well my dear, before I give you any verdict. I cannot give a one-sided verdict.
Just because you are reading the Bhagavad Gita and saying that you do not expect any fruits for your actions is not a reason for not paying you for sure. You must not have used your brains when it should have been used. You must not have followed the Bhagavad Gita and simply read it. You may not have been skilful.
What does the Bhagavad Gita say, “Yogah Karmasu Kaushalam” (yoga is excellence at work). It is an open secret that when you are a subordinate and tell your boss that he is wrong, no matter however right you are, that’s it! You will get the final order. So you have to be skilful in expressing it.
You can say that I feel like this but you know better. Just saying the last part, you know better, not with a different tone but in the right tone will help you. The whole thing is about skill in communication.

Q: How to achieve excellence while following the middle path?
Sri Sri Ravi Shankar: It will happen. Your intention is enough. Main thing is Sadhna (Practices and self effort), next is awareness, and third is - no feverishness.

Nature is Intelligent
See how nature has done it so beautifully! A coconut does not fall when it is heavy and full of water. When the water dries up, it becomes lighter and then it falls. A heavy coconut will never fall, you have to go and pluck it when it is full of water.
Just imagine if someone is just walking and a very heavy coconut falls on their head! My goodness, they will be gone! It is only when a coconut becomes dry and light, then it falls. Nature is so intelligent!
I will tell you a story of two children. One day, a young boy and a young girl were walking, and one of them said, 'This God is so stupid, he does not have brains! In this small wine he puts such a big pumpkin! And on this big Pipal tree he puts little fruits when it can hold the weight of these big fruits. I think the God has no brains'.
It was a very sunny day, so both of them went to take rest under the big tree. As he was resting a fruit fell on his head. That one fruit fell on him and he said, 'Wow, God does have brain. If the pumpkin had fallen on my head I would have finished!'
So here is somebody who for a minute thought that God has no brain, and a minute later realized that God is very intelligent.
Similarly with mangoes; just before a mango becomes ripe and juicy it snaps and falls on the floor. Suppose it becomes ripe and juicy and then falls then nobody can enjoy its juice. But it falls at a right time so that you can pick it up and enjoy the juice. Nature has tremendous intelligence.

QNA WITH SRI SRI

Q: You have taught life transforming techniques and tools to the whole world. How can this help women become better leaders?
Sri Sri Ravi Shankar: Meditation changes the structure of the brain. According to an article in the American Medical Journal, if you meditate for two weeks, the structure of the brain changes, and the grey cells increase. Many such research studies are available that prove that meditation integrates the left and right side of the brain to make a holistic personality. Meditation has many benefits; it helps enhance the level of vibrancy and energy, which creates an environment that is more congenial, and harmonious; a stress-free, confusion-free mind; and an inhibition-free intellect.
People walk around with a lot of prejudice - men have prejudice against women, women have prejudice against men. There are prejudices among age groups, nationality, social groups. All these prejudices can be done away with, and we will have a prejudice-free society, and a trauma-free memory.
When a person experiences a traumatic situation in their life, that impression gets stuck in their mind for a long time, and does not allow them to look at life from a new perspective. Yoga, meditation and breathing techniques are excellent resources that help work towards freeing the mind - creating a trauma-free memory and a sorrow-free soul.

Q: You said that knowledge of the outside world is objective, and knowledge of the inner world is subjective. How do we know that the inner knowledge is true and I am not falling into illusion?
Sri Sri Ravi Shankar: That’s why you have all these knowledge sessions and meditations. When you feel that you are getting enlightened, be careful! Talk to a teacher, and through the teacher talk to me. Write to me and I will tell you if it’s an illusion or reality.
