Life is a Dream a Burden or a Joke,

Often when you are happy you feel life is a dream because you do not believe in the reality of it. When there is misery you feel life as a burden. And we take trivial things very seriously. But one who has really gone through the pleasure realizes that pleasure is a burden. And if you have undergone misery thoroughly you will realize that life is a dream. In every miserable condition you have been walked or carried through and you realize life is a dream. When you see life is dream a burden or a joke only then can you be centered.

And when you have really gone through misery you have really seen life as a dream. And in between the pain and pleasure life is all a joke. Life is very uncertain. Before it takes you away, realize it is a dream, a burden or a joke.

Someone asked: What about life is a joke?

Answer: A joke you do not question. If you question a joke, it is no longer a joke. Do not question a burden either. It is a waste of time to question life and its events.

The burden makes you go deep. It gets you to the core of yourself. Realization of a dream wakes you up. And seeing life as a joke makes you light. The only certainty is that life is a dream, a burden or a joke and only when you realize this can you be centered.

Q: Tell us something about the importance of doing service.

Sri Sri Ravi Shankar:
If you think, "I am doing a service", while you are serving, it is no good. Service should be part of your nature. When you do something for yourself, do you call it service? Do you say, "I'm serving myself?" No, because it's such a natural instinct. Any thing you do to your own children, do you call it service? You consider it your duty. So as a human being, our duty or our nature is to help others.

For a conscious person, helping is his nature. He's not doing it as an act or favour to someone. So all that we need to do is raise our own consciousness and the consciousness of the people, and service will happen automatically, because then you can't be without service. I feel that this way is better than asking someone to serve.

It is the same with compassion as well. When consciousness is elevated, it feels as though everyone is part of you. At that time compassion also loses its relevance as an act. It becomes quite natural for you to be compassionate. Not that compassion disappears, but it's not a conscious effort that one has to make.

Memory -- A Hindrance and a Blessing The forgetfulness of the nature of man is the root cause of all problems and suffering in life. The very remembrance of one’s nature, which is godliness, brings freedom in life. Here, memory is your best friend. The purpose of knowledge is to remind you of your true nature.

In the Bhagvad Gita, Arjuna said to Krishna, "I got back my memory. Now I have realized and will do as you say." Memory is a blessing and your best friend when it comes to your true nature. Memory is a hindrance when it does not let you be free of events, pleasant or unpleasant.

Pleasant events create cravings and competition in the mind, and do not allow fresh experiences, whereas unpleasant events give a biased perception and create paranoia. So the memory is both a blessing and a hindrance, depending on whether you remember your nature or you are stuck with events in time and space.

Q: When we see you in satsang or in Kriya, we feel high, but how to get that high always?

Sri Sri Ravi Shankar:

Forget about always. When you take shower, you feel that warmth or coolness. Shower is for sometime only, but that shower keeps you clean the whole day. Isn’t it? If you say you want to always be in the shower, then you have to be a fish. You can be in the water all the time. Even a few satsangs and Kriyas that uplift your energy is good. It’s natural in the world. Energy comes in waves, you feel high and then when you go back in market, the level goes down. And then you go and watch a movie, it goes further down. It happens! You know, just watch the faces of people who come out of the movie theatre, they look like zombies. They don’t come with brilliant shining eyes or with a brilliant face or with high energy. They don’t have that high enthusiastic energy. Because of two hours of sitting and watching, they feel so dull and tired. These things happen. So energy level is never steady. It goes in waves, up and down. And doing all the practices, coming to satsangs, keep it more or less on the high note, okay! We shouldn’t mind if it goes down sometime, otherwise that becomes another worry, ‘Oh my energy is down.’ Got it? And turn back and see in your own life, how it has been? As you are attending meditations, satsangs, steadily there is certain stability in your energy level too.

Austerity

Austerity is often mistaken to be poverty, self-denial. It is neither. Austerity comes out of maturity. It is a sign of social health. Often people who practice austerity are resentful of richness. This is a very pitiable state. Such austerity is not born out of maturity but out of compulsion. The true austerity has tolerance for richness and is never resentful.

In fact, one who is mature will have pity for one who is not austere. Austerity is not against celebration and just vanity is not celebration. Celebration dawns in the spirit. Only one who is rich in spirit can practice austerity. One may be rich materially but if he is poor in spirit he can neither celebrate nor evolve. Poverty of spirit is vanity. Austerity brings freedom from the pride of vanity. But taking pride in austerity is again a vanity !

Austerity comes out of abundance, and austerity brings abundance. If you feel a lack in any area of life, immediately start austerity. Austerity not only brings freedom but nurtures sharing and caring.

Q: How do people who do wrong things rise up in life?

Sri Sri Ravi Shankar:

You know, when you see people who do wrong things rising up, you lose your courage, your conviction, your morality; you lose your ground and you feel broken. That’s when you need to remind yourself that they are only rising up to fall back down. Bad elements need a fall, that’s their final destination. But even to fall you need to rise a little higher, only then do you really get broken. So they raise to get a big fall. If you are convinced of this reality, then nothing whatsoever can touch you; no event can pull you down, no event can demoralize you, no nervous breakdown can happen, nor will you ever have heart breaks. Your morale becomes very strong with this conviction.

See, every event creates some knowledge and some emotions. Often events have some lessons to teach you, and also create along with it some emotion. But what do we normally do? We don’t learn from the events at all, but we carry forward the emotion. And the emotion keeps haunting us, like a scar or a craving.

When knowledge is not learnt, you are left with a bag of emotions. Be it positive or negative, it is going to bother you in the present and in the future.

The stronger the craving for a pleasurable experience, the more painful it will be in the present. This is because the pleasurable experience has created an intense craving in you which carries over to the present and keeps you in a bigger mess. Am I making the point clear? For example, if you have gone through a break-up which was intensely painful, that is because the pleasure in the relationship had been equally intense, which is why it was so painful. It is the craving (for that pleasurable experience) that made it so painful, leaving you in the present moment with only a bag of emotions.

Now what does a wise one do? He takes forward the lessons from the past and leaves behind the emotions in the past. If someone has cheated you, then learn the lesson from the experience. What did you do that someone could cheat you. How unintelligent were you that you allowed someone to cheat you. Just learn the lesson instead of carrying anger, frustration and hatred towards the other.

Most of us, instead of learning the lesson, we carry the emotions of the past. It is not an intelligent thing to do. The intelligent thing to do is to carry the lesson and drop the emotion so that you can keep your smile genuine, unblemished and untouched by the event. What do you say? You can keep your spirits high, come what may. Now! Now! (Snapping his fingers indicating ‘Be in the present moment’). Life is always a mixture of pleasant and unpleasant things; things which you like and things which you don’t like. Life is a mixture of this.

You know, the scientists have been talking about the Butterfly Effect. When a butterfly flaps its wings in South America, it has an impact on the clouds that are hovering around China. With this being the case, we cannot think that if we sit and do some chanting, it will have no impact on the world consciousness. Every little thing has an impact on the universe because we are an integral part of this universe. There is one research that was done by a scientist from Japan and the result of the research is shared in our website as Video. Water is a composed of very tiny crystals. So we can see how different sounds affect the composition of these crystals in the said video.

As you can see from the video, chanting has a profound effect on the molecular structure of water, and our body is composed of 70% water. Using negative words and unpleasant sounds affects the molecular structure of water adversely.

If you have seen the video, chanting impacts water so positively. When we sit and chant these ancient mantras, the crystals of water take a perfect shape (implying harmony and peace). This perfection in the microcosm brings about perfection in the macrocosm, in our society and in the people around us.

Raj Yoga means getting things without much effort. What you are doing is Raj Yoga. You are getting everything on a platter here. You didn’t have to do all that Lord Buddha did. How many years he walked miles and miles! What not he did! He fasted for so many months and did everything that everybody said.

You didn’t have to go to Himalayas to get some experience, or to do something great there. Royally you sat and you got what you wanted. This is Raj Yoga.

Raja means king. Raj Yoga means like a king, who gets everything with the snap of his fingers. Effortlessly getting things in your life is Raj Yoga.

In astrology, there are many permutations and combinations. If you have some particular combination, then that is Raj Yoga. Means, you are born in a good family, you have got a good career, good money, good children, or talents. All these are counted as an impact of Raj Yoga. Everything; name, fame, talents will have some sort of Raj Yoga. Many Raj Yogas are there.

That's up to you. If you want to play multiple roles, you can do that. But I think children should go to school and mix with other kids.

See things from a bigger perspective. The world is like a dream. If you are stuck to events, you can never see the being. Being is beyond events, so your purpose in life is to realize the being and stick to the being, not to the events. Events are just like a drama. An actor comes in several different dresses and performs and gets back into the screen. If your mind is stuck in the event, there is no better ignorance than that. You are so ignorant then you live in a small hole, you have to get the events out of your head. Pleasant, unpleasant, all events. Do you see what I am saying?

All that happened this morning – you standing at the airport when I came out of the VIP room, isn’t it all like a dream now? What is a dream? It's an impression in the mind. What is a memory? It is an impression, that's it. Everything that has happened till this moment is like a dream. Why we say it's like a dream, because in the waking state you are experiencing a dream. In a dream, you don't have control. But in the waking state you can create, remember or recollect, that is why it's like a dream, but it is an impression. So, realizing the dream-like nature of the world moves you onto another dimension, and that is where reality begins.

Divine Love And The Complaining Face

How would you like to see yourself? Happy and bubbling with enthusiasm or dull and difficult to please?

Often you like to be pleased, appeased and cajoled. So you put up a tough, upset face and act difficult to please. If a person has to appease and please ten people all the time, it will be so tiring. People who keep a long face and expect others to cajole and appease them make others run away. Lovers often do this. They expend a lot of energy in cajoling and this brings down the joy and celebration of the moment.

It is okay for you to show your upset mood or tendency once in a while, but doing it over and over again is taxing for you and people you love.

If you feel down, appease and please yourself. Your need to be appeased by someone else is the sign of grossness. This is the root of ignorance. If you want attention, all you get is tension.

Become one whose enthusiasm never dies, come what may.

It is not possible to attain Divine Love with a complaining face. The complaining face is a sign of an unaware mind. If you want to complain, complain to God or your Guru because both have their ears covered. (Laughter)

Q: The food that we eat today has so many chemicals and the government policies promote these. How to tackle this? Please also talk about organic food and organic farming.

Sri Sri Ravi Shankar:

Organic farming is the future of Earth. If we want the earth to sustain itself, we have to go organic. There is no other way. There are people who are so greedy and selfish that they do not care for the planet, and so they promote these harmful things to the farmers. One or two crops come very good, and that tempts the famers and they take it. Once they take it, then from the third or fourth crop, everything goes down and even the land gets spoilt. The land becomes unfit for cultivation. This is the problem.

That is why we have established an agricultural institute to teach farmers organic farming; the ancient type of farming.

In ancient days, they would put three crops together. So even if one crop dies the other two crops are there. So people were never starving. They never went bankrupt, or never went into loss. They would put, let us say, sugarcane along with some pulse, so that if one crop fails, the other two will be there. Usually all three crops would yield and it would fix the content of nitrogen in the soil all by itself, because of the variety. This is the kind of farming that one has to revert to.

We have to do Agnihotra (a Vedic yagna) and that will take care of harmful insects and pests. So you do not need to put pesticides. Then there are natural pesticides like cow urine, Neem leaves and several other things like that. So we need to revert to this.

We have to imbibe the value of sharing in children

There are two tendencies that are within us, one is of taking and the other of giving. What is worth noting is which value system we are imbibing in our children.
If they are hesitant to take or ask, then that is a sign of good values. But if they are hesitant to give then there is something wrong there.
It is a good sign when people feel hesitation to put their hand out to take. But if people hesitate to extend their hands out to help then we need to change the direction of society.
If the child is sattvic he always makes an effort to share his belongings with everyone. But if the child is rajasic then he tries to take things from everyone.

We have to imbibe the value of giving and sharing in children; happiness in giving and sharing, and hesitation to take. They should feel hesitation to put their hands out and ask.
There are people who have enough yet they keep asking for more. This is very strange.

So, when there is an attitude to give and hesitation to take or to ask, then the direction of life has reached an elevated level.
If there is hesitation to give and no shame in taking then that comparatively is of a lower level of existence. And there are some people who even go to the extent of pouncing, grabbing and seizing which is an even lower level of existence.
Now in this world there are all kinds of people and all sorts of things happen. So we must not hold anyone guilty. The important message is that we must set an example for others and not make them feel guilty.

Q: Guruji, what is the importance of charity? What is the highest form of charity?

Sri Sri Ravi Shankar:

Charity brings purity of mind and purity of heart. Charity means sharing. But charity is also not considered the most noble act because you always do charity to someone who is not your own. You never say, ‘I did charity to my daughter or my son’. So the first step is compassion. Second step is charity, giving what you have to others who need it and then the third step is simply a sense of belongingness where you share because you can’t but share. You don’t think that you are doing charity and yet you do charity. That is true charity. Real service is doing service without asserting that I did service. Suppose you find a girl has fallen down, you go and you lift her and put a band-aid on her and take care of her. After that you don’t say, ’Oh! I did a great service to the girl!’ You did it because as human beings you can’t but help. You can’t just walk away when someone is hurt. It’s impossible. So service should be like our nature.

Expand Your Vices

Q: In Bhagavad Gita it is said that your Soul itself is the friend and the enemy. Isn’t enmity an action by another? Are we ourselves the reason for the enemy?

Sri Sri Ravi Shankar:

Yes, enmity is an emotion which arises in our mind. If another person considers us an enemy then that is their doing, not ours. It is their headache; from our side we don’t consider anybody as an enemy.

If it seems that somebody is an enemy, then act accordingly. I’m not asking you to go hug them or make them your own. If an enemy brings a gun, you also stay ready. If they come with bricks and stones, you also get ready accordingly. You also be ready to protect yourself. Use your intellect.

At the level of emotions there is no benefit in considering anybody an enemy. Never feel anybody is an enemy.

Spirituality And Celebration

Celebration is the nature of the spirit. Any celebration has to be spiritual. A celebration without spirituality does not have any depth. And silence gives the depth to celebration. Some people think being silent is spirituality. E.g. Many meditators feel that laughing, singing and dancing are not spiritual. Some people think only celebration is spirituality. E.g. In some parts of the world, such as in rural India or Africa, celebration means loud music; there is no silence at all. Q: In Shiva Purana it is said that anyone who worships Lord Shiva is freed from all sins. Does this mean that corruption begins at the top?

Sri Sri Ravi Shankar:

No! Do you know what corruption is? Corruption is doing that which you don’t wish to be done to you or to your kith and kin. You cannot link pooja (here meaning worshipping Lord Shiva) and corruption.

Pooja is a feeling that comes to you out of fullness. Like when a guest comes to your house, you come to the door and receive them. If someone very dear to you is coming to see you, don’t you rush to the train station or the airport to receive them? Does it come out of a feeling of compulsion? You can tell them to call a taxi, but instead you take your vehicle to go and receive them. Why do you do that? What is that feeling? It cannot be called corruption. So pooja means that which comes out of fullness.

In Puranas, many things are written. I’m not an advocate of all the Puranas. Many of them are a means of expression. In fact, the word Purana means a new way of expressing. The Hindi Purana and Sanskrit Purana have totally opposite meanings. In Hindi, Purana means old, and in Sanskrit Purana means very new or modern; it means a different way of expression. Don’t call that as a corruption. God is not so stupid that He waits for you to break a coconut to give you a boon!

All the poojas you do are to express your fullness, not to please God. I think this is a very wrong concept in the world. We think we do things to please God; this is wrong understanding. People fast for many days so that they can please God. You fast to purify your body; you don’t have to fast to please God. This is a wrong understanding.

Uncertainty

You can be at ease with the uncertainty of the world when you realise the certainty of the consciousness. Often people do just the opposite. They are certain about the things in the world and uncertain about God. They rely on something that is not reliable and get upset. Uncertainty causes craving for stability and the most stable thing in the universe is our Self.

The world is of change, the Self is of non-change. You have to rely on the non-change and accept the change. If you are certain that everything is uncertain, then you are liberated. When you are uncertain in ignorance then you become worried and tense. Uncertainty with awareness brings higher states of consciousness and a smile.

Bharat says: A certain smile!!!

Often people think that certainty is freedom. If you feel that freedom when you are not certain then that is 'real' freedom. Often your certainty or uncertainty is based on the relative world. To be certain about the uncertainty of the relative, makes you certain about the existence of the absolute and brings a 'certain' faith in the absolute. Nitin says: Yes, to understand this you certainly need to have awareness!!!

Question : Can we still be enthusiastic when we are uncertain? Sri Sri : Yes, in knowledge you can be enthusiastic in uncertainty. Often people who are uncertain dont act, they simply sit and wait. Acting in uncertainty makes life a game, a challenge. Being in uncertainty is letting go. Certainty about the relative world creates dullness. Uncertainty about the Self creates fear. Uncertainty about matter brings certainty about consciousness.

Q: What is the reason behind Vitamin D and B12 deficiency? Most of the ladies are facing this issue. What is the solution other than medicines?

Sri Sri Ravi Shankar:

It is mainly because of the use of pesticides and chemical fertilizers in farming. It has caused our soil to become anemic (low iron content in the soil). You get Vitamin D from the sun. If you are sitting indoors most of the time, then you should take tablets.

You need to switch from inorganic food to more organic food. Also you should avoid food with MSG (Mono Sodium Glutamate, a kind of preservative). They use it in foods like Noodles, etc., to enhance the flavor. Many products have this today. It stays in the body and prevents sunlight from getting absorbed in your body. As far as possible, you should avoid all these kind of packaged and preserved food. It has already been discarded in many countries in the world, but in India it is still being used. More people need to know about this. Eat more and more organic food, as much as possible.
