Q: Tell us about ‘Akshya Tritiya’. I was wondering if this day happens every year?

Sri Sri Ravi Shankar: Today is celebrated as a very auspicious day in India. It’s called Akshaya Tritiya. It is related with many stories. One of the stories is that, on this day the Ganges (a holy river in India) came to Earth to purify mankind.

It is every year. Akshaya Tritiya is the third day after the new moon. Fifth day after the new moon is when Adi Shankaracharya was born. That is why my parents also kept my name Shankar, because I was born on the same day. The main knowledge of Adi Shankara is only one thing, everything is perishable. Thoughts come and go, feelings come and go. One day everything disappears. But you are the light that stays forever. It is also associated with two instances of Lord Krishna.

What happened is, once the five Pandavas, (the five brothers from the Mahabharata epic) and their wife were in exile. At that time a saint called and said, ‘I am going to have food with you.’ When the message came, they had no food. They had already had eaten and had kept their pots away. The lady, Draupadi (the wife of the 5 Pandavas) prayed to Lord Krishna. At the same time, Krishna came to their house and said, ‘Oh I am very hungry.’ When he came in, he saw that there was only one grain of rice stuck to the pot. He picked that one grain of rice and ate it, and turned the pot into an Akshaya Patra. Akshaya Patra means that which never finishes.

When the saint came with 400 people, Draupadi could feed all of the who came from the same pot. The more she took from the pot, the more would come from it. It would never go down. So it is a common expression in India to say, 'This is an akshaya patra', which means it always keeps giving.
The other story is, Krishna had a friend who was very poor. His name was Sudhama. Sudhamameans a good place, or a very benevolent place. So, one day his wife said, ‘We are living in such poverty and Krishna is so rich. Why don’t you go and get something from him. He is such a close friend.’ Sudhama said, ‘Okay, I’ll go, but I can’t go to a friend empty handed. I have to take something'. So his wife packed three handful of puffed rice in a scarf and gave it to him. It is like rice crispies.

When Sudhama goes to Krishna and Krishna welcomes him, and washes his feet. The story goes that they were such good friends and in the friendship there was so much love that Sudhama forgets to give the rice to Krishna and also forgets to ask him for anything. He came to ask him for a favor but he could not ask him anything because he was so overwhelmed with love. They were so close that he forgot to ask. He could not ask. He could not even speak.

When he was about to leave, Krishna asked, ‘Hey, you have brought me something? Give it to me. I know your wife has sent something. Why are you not giving it to me. Come on, give it.’
Krishna took the rice and he ate one handful, then he ate the second handful, by that time his wife Rukmini came and said, ‘I want to take the third one’. While all this was happening, Sudhama left without asking him for anything. When he reached home, he found his house flooded with riches and gold. That’s the story.

So, people today buy gold and they gift each other. Today if you get anything, it will always grow. You gift, or you buy, it all grows. That is the belief. Like that there are some more stories also. But right now this is good enough.

Q: I feel like I live in two worlds, the Art of Living world and the rest. It is sometimes so difficult to combine the two. Could you comment on this?

Sri Sri Ravi Shankar: Good, be a bridge. You are the bridge, help people walk from here to there. It is a very short bridge.

The heart always longs for old. What do we take pride in? We take pride in old friendships. We say, 'This is my old friend', because the heart wants old, but the mind wants what's new; latest technology, latest fashion is the run of the mind. And we need that, but at the same time we should not forget the heart. - Sri Sri Ravi Shankar

Connect With Nature

Time and again we should lift our eyes away from the mundane. The nature of the mundane is that it just occupies you and swallows you completely. Small things can occupy your mind and your time. Simple things such as cooking, shopping, washing clothes, ironing, all these trivial small things eat up most of your time, and sometimes they drown you and keep you so occupied that you have very little time to look at something which is beyond the material existence.

So the wise people, while doing all of this, will time and again taken their attention away from the mundane and shift their attention towards the subtle. This can happen during sun rise and sun set. When the sun is rising just gaze at the rising sun. At that moment, there is a shift in the universe from night to day, and in that shift the mind also easily shifts from the mundane to something ethereal, to something beyond. The world of the Gods is inches away from us, not very far.
So if you lift your eyes from the mundane and look at the sunrise, the mind lifts away from the mundane.

This sun is rising from so many millenniums, still its charm and its newness has never diminished. The sunrise creates more alertness and wakefulness in you, while the sunset is more relaxing and romantic with the birds singing. It just takes you to a dream world, and the mantras start coming up in you. Prayer happens spontaneously. Instead of talking about the mundane things, connect with nature. It uplifts you. That is why it is called sandhya because the dawn and dusk are the best time to relieve ourselves from the mundane and to get a foothold in ethereal, in the subtle, and in the most beautiful realm of the creation.

Similarly on full moon day, when you look at the moon your breath becomes musical. Looking at the moon, the prana in you becomes musical and life becomes harmonious. That is why all spiritual practices are connected with the sun and the moon. Buddha got enlightened on a full moon day. Guru Poornima happens on a full moon. Full moon meditation is very well know. So the moon is also very connected to spiritual practices. You can say that these meditations are more compelling.

Why do we try to change people? It is because they are hurting us. And the more we want to change someone because they are hurting us, they are not going to change, I tell you. - Sri Sri Ravi Shankar

Q: I have a number of businesses and I am also a chairman of four school. I have seen that many students and teachers undergo a lot of stress. How can we help them come out of this stress?

Sri Sri Ravi Shankar: We have special programs for schools, and it has worked magic. I want to quote one incident in Chicago, USA. One district school had 260 incidents of violence in a year, after the program, it came down to 62. And in the second year, it came down further to 20. So it is very important for children to learn the value of non-violence, non-aggression, friendliness and co-operation. And we have programs designed just for this. We are very happy to share this with you. Such programs are held for thousands of children everywhere because it is important for them to learn how to handle negativity.

Neither at school nor at home does anyone teach us how to handle our negative emotion. Getting angry, jealous, frustrated is natural. When these negative feelings come up, who teaches us how to handle our mind? When we don't know how to handle these emotions, the pressure builds up and builds up and then shows itself as violence. Sometimes people become so disruptive that they turn schizophrenic.

Children who are brilliant, by the age of 17-18 years, they get bipolar and schizophrenic diseases. So we need to educate them on how to handle their negative emotions, how to handle their own mind and be friendly with everybody.

In a classroom if you ask a child, how many friends do you have, they say three, or four, or five. I ask them a question. In a school of 5000 children, if you are not being friendly with 50 kids, then how are you going to be friendly with 7 billion people in the world? So we have not taught children the value of friendliness; how to be friendly with everyone around. We have some programs where we tell them to make one new friend every day.
