Be loved

You don't need to worry to maintain knowledge. When knowledge is lodged in you as wisdom, it will never leave you. Wisdom lodges itself in your heart.

Make the Divine your Valentine (your sweet Beloved). This is the last thing to do and the first thing to do.
Keep your heart in a safe place; it is too delicate. Events, small things make strong impressions on it. And you cannot find a better place than the Divine to keep your heart safe and your mind sane.
When you keep your heart in the Divine, the moving time, the passing events, will not be able to touch it, will not create a scar.

A precious stone needs a setting around it, gold or silver, to hold it and to wear it; so wisdom and knowledge are that setting around the heart which will hold it in the Divine.

See the Divine in your Valentine and make the Divinity your Valentine (your sweet beloved).
Just BE and know that you are LOVED.
That is BELOVED.

Do You Have To Be Thankful And Feel Obliged?

When you are on a spiritual path, you are not thankful or obliged to anybody. In the Gita, Krishna says, "He is dear to Me who neither goes on thanking people nor hates anyone (Na abhinandati na dveshthi)." Thanking and feeling obliged indicates that you believe in some one else's existence rather than in the Divine who is ruling everything. When you feel obliged, then you are not honoring the principles of karma or the divine plan.

Appreciate people for what they are, do not thank them for what they do. Otherwise your thankfulness is centered around ego. You are grateful, but not for an act. You are grateful for what is. As every individual is nothing but a puppet of the ONE, thanking and being obliged is simply an exhibition of ignorance. Everything is ruled, controlled and managed by one Divinity, that consciousness has to shine forth in every act of yours; you do not have to make a mood of it.

Q: Guruji, we are so grateful to you, what should we do?

Sri Sri: When you have a total sense of belonging, then gratefulness does not become an obligation. Such gratefulness is for the Divine only, which enhances strength.

Q: You just spoke about making that inner connection. As I was making plans to visit you, I came across many parents who are not able to connect with their own children and relate to them. They often ask, “What is the magic that Gurudev has, because of which so many people get drawn and connected to him instantly, when they do not listen to their own parents?”

Sri Sri Ravi Shankar:

Yes, the youths have a lot of enthusiasm and they know that I always encourage enthusiasm. They also have a lot of curiosity and sincere intentions to learn, and when they come here, their thirst for knowledge and curiosity gets fulfilled. The youths are full of love and joy and they know that it is honored here.

One does not become young only by age. Anyone who is young at heart, who is full of zeal and enthusiasm, I would call such people as the youth. Those who are not yet tired out, are really young. In fact, even old and elderly people start feeling young after coming to the Ashram. The moment they feel relieved of their tiredness and worries, the enthusiasm to take up new challenges gets rekindled in them.

Here at the Ashram we often inspire the youths to do something beneficial for the society. One kind of happiness is what you get by taking or gaining something. But there is another kind of happiness that you get when you share with others. You get a lot of joy by that. So, life is the journey from the happiness that you get by taking, to the joy that you get by sharing more and more with others. There is so much energy in the youth, they can do so much good for the society, and they genuinely want to do something as well.

The heat of knowledge

For your prayer to be answered, the desire has to be intense. The greater the intensity of desire and the later it gets fulfilled, then greater will be the gratitude. lntense desire leads you to devotion. For desire to get intense, time and the need for the desire are required. The feeling of gratitude is so overwhelming after the fulfillment of desire that it's achievement loses its charm and significance.

The son of a farmer in India had a life-long desire to go to England and he prayed deeply for it. Even the news of his trip to England materializing filled him with immense gratitude -- he did not even care whether he went or not.

Often people think that they are unfortunate if their desires don't get fulfilled quickly. lntense desire can frustrate you or make you prayerful. In prayerfulness, there is gratitude and devotion. Any intense experience makes you whole.

The Kumbha Mela

Once every 12 years, all the seers, saints and aspirants of spiritual knowledge congregate at the confluence (sangam), of the 3 holy rivers, Ganga, Yamuna and Saraswati. The Ganga is a symbol of Knowledge and Self-inquiry. It is on the banks of the Yamuna that events of love have been immortalized. When Knowledge and Love come together, when the head meets the heart, Saraswati, symbolic of wisdom and the fine arts emerge.

When a tiny atom explodes, the radiation lasts for a long time, the mind is even more subtle than one millionth of an atom. When the mind explodes, that is Enlightenment. Over the centuries, thousands of sages who have meditated, done penance and been enlightened come to the "Kumbha Mela" and relieve themselves of the burden of the merits gained through Sadhana by bathing in the rivers. Water has the quality to absorb the energy that they radiate. The seekers, who come from all corners to be in the company of the seers and saints, gain that merit when they take a dip in the rivers.

Space by itself cannot be bought, and a lump of clay has no value, but when space is enveloped by clay it gains value, this is a Kumbha (pot). Spirit is all over in Nature, but when it dawns in the human body as an elevated state of consciousness, then it gains immense value. An Embodied and elevated spirit is usually referred to as Kumbha. This is why the enlightened age is also called the Aquarian age. Kumbha denotes a pot, which is symbolic of fullness and perfection.

The Kumbha Mela is an ancient version of a spiritual expo.

I would say, try and gain knowledge about something and at the same time have faith as well. See, you cannot possibly know everything. And you also need to have deep faith in something. Embrace everyone you meet with love. That is my message.
See, if someone gives you something and says, “It is very sweet”, then you should first taste it yourself instead of simply believing them. If someone tells you, “It is poison, do not touch it”, then you should not say, “No, first I will taste it and then believe you” (laughter).

Three things are needed for life:

1.Purity of heart

2.Clarity of mind and

3.Sincerity in action or spontaneity in action.

Do not get stuck in just thinking, “What will happen to me?” See, there are problems in everyone’s life, but remember that they do not stay forever. They come and go. Do not let them overwhelm you. And spirituality will give you that much needed strength and stability to withstand and overcome all problems with a smile. Spirituality can give a new direction to your thoughts and to your life.

Rest and Activity

Activity and rest are two vital aspects of life. To find a balance in them is a skill in itself. When to have what and how much to have is wisdom. Finding them in each other-activity in rest and rest in activity-is the ultimate freedom.

More tiring than the work itself is the memory of hard work. Thinking you have worked hard itself interferes with the quality of rest. Some people take pride in working hard without any results. And there are others who crave for long rest not knowing the rest is in non-doership. It is the quality of rest, even if it is short, that recuperates.

When rest is needed, your body will automatically take it. Resting, without thinking about the need for it, is more restful. Desirelessness, Dispassion, and Samadhi are the deepest rest.

Question: Our work is very stressful. We don't get enough time for the family. What do we do?

Answer: Do you spend quality time with your family? Even if you spend half an hour are you cordial and fully attentive to the needs of your family? It is not the length of time you spend with your family matters. What matters is the quality of time that you spend with them.

Thinking you need rest makes you restless. Thinking you have to work hard makes you tired. Thinking you have worked hard brings self pity.

From time to time, knowledge gets revealed as per the need of the hour. It all happens spontaneously, by itself. This is all very amazing. The whole creation is filled with wonder. We often speak of miracles and they do keep happening in everyone’s lives from time to time.

When we are at peace within and repose in that depth of the Self, then there is really no lack of such things from happening. There is no end to the wonders in creation, and wonder is the preface to Yoga. When surprising things start happening in our life, we naturally become aware of another higher dimension in life. We start to have some realization about that which is unmanifest, invisible and far greater than we can imagine.

This is not limited to a few special people. Anyone can have this experience, but only a few people actually get this.

A sculptor in a temple uses all types of stones. Certain stones he uses for the foundations. These never appear outside. From certain stones which are good to carve, the sculptor makes the walls and pillars of the Temple. From other stones he makes the steps. Certain stones become the tower of the Temple. Only those stones which are extremely suitable for carving will become the Deity and be installed in the Temple. When the stone become a part of the Temple, it no longer remains a stone, it becomes a sculpture, a piece of art, it becomes the Living Deity.

In the same way many people come to the Master. According to the degree of their surrender they are installed by the Master. All are essential.

If there were no steps, how could a person reach the Temple?

Yes, this is a great gift of the modern technology. It is because of these technological advances that today we can reach out to every corner of the world.

Knowledge which till now was held secret by certain people or communities is now able to reach so many people. We can share our knowledge with far more people now because of technology and the Internet. And this is why I chose to open the doors of knowledge to everybody.This knowledge is so precious and is not for being restricted to people of any one particular religion or community. This knowledge belongs to the entire humanity everywhere. All of mankind can be greatly benefited by this knowledge regardless of whichever religion or faith they follow.

Along with religion, I feel that following certain practices that bring peace and happiness to the mind and spirit is also very important and should be a part of everyone’s life. Such practices help strengthen the body, make the mind and heart blossom in joy, and sharpen the intellect. I think everyone needs access to such knowledge. This is why I thought about taking this knowledge to every home following our ancient Indian motto – Vasudhaiva Kutumbakam (the whole world is one family). There are three levels of existence - Outer world, subtle world of different energies and Divinity or God. All the yagnas being performed here aim to achieve both spiritual and material benefits. Q: Today the Sudarshan Kriya is such a technique that has changed the lives of millions around the world. How did you come to know or acquire it?

Sri Sri Ravi Shankar:

I used to teach meditation in my early years. But I often used to feel there is something still missing, and something more is needed to make the experience complete. I always used to feel as if something more is going to come up. So I took a vow of silence for 10 days in Shimoga, in Karnataka, near the Tungabhadra river. After that, a few people collected there to meet me and asked me to speak. So I spoke to them and taught them the Sudarshan Kriya, and I also learnt along with them as I taught them.

The Sudarshan Kriya came to me like an inspiration, just like how poetry happens so spontaneously. I never had to put in too much of my mind for this. It all came through deep intuition, like how we download things from the Internet these days. Our brain is a supercomputer. We can download so many things into our brain.

Q: As per what we have heard about the many saints of India, it appears that as they progress on the spiritual path, their formal education gets left behind. But you have grown up in a very different environment. How did you balance the two?

Sri Sri Ravi Shankar:

Yes, for me both spirituality and my education always went hand in hand. I would say it has been my good fortune indeed. Even as I continued to go deeper in Spirituality, my education also continued. I always had a strong interest in Science. And I never thought that Indian Spirituality is separate, or far away from Science. I never saw any contradiction or conflict between the two.

A person should attend to both spiritual knowledge and science, and should have a scientific view or approach to everything. One should not blindly accept anything without asking questions about it. That is a sign of having a scientific perspective. For progressing in spirituality all you need is unshakable faith. Life should be a beautiful combination of the two.

Ganesha Rahasya

The ultimate truth in this existing world is that it is nothing but a collection of molecules. This is called as ‘Gana’ (collective form). Our own body is a ‘Gana’. It is made up of flesh, blood and bone marrow. Thus the Lord of all ‘Ganas’ is ‘GANESHA’.

Ganesha is ‘Achintya’, ‘Avyakta’ and ‘Ananta’. That is beyond thought, beyond expression and is eternal. Thus no other is as beautiful as Him and He is omnipresent.

Now the question arises that why this one-consciousness and one supreme power is depicted in the form of an elephant? The elephant is endowed with peculiar qualities, like its fearless and royal walk. It proudly destroys any obstacle on its path. An elephant is also a symbol of authority, endurance, strength and courage. We are thus, able to imbibe all these qualities into our consciousness.

The long trunk of the elephant symbolizes that true enlightenment is a good balance between ‘knowledge’ and its implementation (in action). Ganesha has only one tooth that stands for ‘one consciousness’.

We are often struck by the question that why does a big Ganesha sit on a small mouse? This is because the mouse is ‘Logic’ and the ‘Knowledge of self’ and over it sits the symbol of ‘supreme knowledge’ Ganesha.

The ‘Modak’ in Ganesha’s hand is the attainment of ‘Ultimate Bliss’. Also his one hand showers blessings on those who have faith and have surrendered to him. In one hand, Ganesha holds a ‘Pash’ or a string that is to tie down oneself in discipline. The other hand of Ganesha holds an ‘Ankush’ or a spear, showing self-control.

Always, the belly of Ganesha is enormous with a snake around it. This stands for acceptance with awareness. Also we surrender all our dreams of woe and distress to Ganesha in the form of ‘Durva’ grass.

We are aware of the story of Ganesha’s birth. Ganesha was born out of the collection of dirt from Parvati’s body. ‘Parvati’ is the high energy of a celebration or festival, and there always is some aspect of negativity in this high energy. This is symbolized by the dirt. When this body of dirt encountered the ‘Shiva element’, the ‘Advait Tatva’ its head, that is ego, fell apart and was then replaced by the head of an elephant. Ganesha was blessed by Lord Shiva himself that he would be worshipped at the out start of any auspicious occasion or puja.

Q: At what age did you start having this inclination towards spirituality?

Sri Sri Ravi Shankar:

See, I always had some interest in spirituality since the beginning. We all carry certain samskaras (impressions) through lifetimes; some we imbibe from the environment and some we carry with us through lifetimes. So the seed is always there.

This is not the first time that we have come on this Earth. We have been here many times before as well. If you pay close attention to children, you will see that any child up to the age of three years is able to remember the things about his or her past life. Children also try to express about it in their own way, but many people around them do not take it very seriously. If we actually try to listen and understand them then we will be able to know what their past was like. The past for each and every one of us is very deep and vast, but we never really pay much attention to this. When we go deep in meditation, when we go deeper in our sadhana then all these levels open up. All our past impressions from previous lives also emerge. The good impressions get carried forward with us while the meaningless ones get left behind.

Always?

How to be happy always?

Forget about always, then you are happy. In wanting to be comfortable always, one becomes lazy. In wanting perfection always, one become angry. In wanting to be rich always, one becomes greedy. When we do not realise that only life is for always, then fear comes. This projection of the nature of self which is "always", on the temporal which can never be "always", is called Maya.

All ways do not lead you, only one way leads you. If you remove always from your dictionary then everything is alright. Drop "always" and all will be right - that is intelligence.

Q: How can I connect more and more to the divine in myself? Do I need many lifetimes?

Sri Sri Ravi Shankar: Just relax, you are already connected. You just have to wake up and see this, that's all! Just relax. In the Bible also there is a saying, "Be still and know that I am God".

You are in space, right? Do you have to look for space? What do you need to understand? I am in space. You don't have to keep repeating, "I am in space, I am in space".

So you are in Germany, you know it and that's it. You don't have to wake up every morning and say, "I am in Germany, I am in Germany" (laughter). You may land up in mental hospital maybe within Germany or across the border in Strasbourg! Some things you should simply accept and assume. How can that happen? When you have total relaxation, when you don't do anything. When you do nothing, that is when you tap into the source of energy. And later on, when you do any action, just be spontaneous.

If you don't get this now, never mind, because as long as there is a lot of rajas (tendency to act) in the system, you won’t understand this. That's why I would say, just meditate, relax and keep alive this passion to be connected and that will take you forward step by step.

You have to have patience. Don't be in a hurry. If someone says, "I am going to connect you today", never do that. Say, "Okay, thank you. It’s not an emergency sort of thing".

When you sit still and meditate, know that you are in that space. You can't be there forever and so you come out and act. Be dynamic in your activity. Of course, these two are conflicting, but a time comes when that state of consciousness continues for you, even in your activity. Anything you do, you won’t lose that state, anything you do, it will be there all the time. But this takes its own time.

Steeped in Mystery Is Devotion

One who is not amazed by the magnificence of this Creation, his eyes are not yet opened. Once your eyes are open, they close and this is called meditation. (Laughter)

Tell me, what in this Creation? Is not a mystery? Birth is a mystery; death is a mystery. If both birth and death are mysterious, then life is certainly a greater mystery. Isn't it?

Being completely immersed in the mystery of Life and this Creation is Samadhi. Your knowing or believing doesn't really matter to what Is. This Creation is an unfathomable secret, and its mysteries only deepen. Getting steeped in mystery is Devotion. The "Scene" is a mystery; the "Seer" is a mystery. Deepening the mystery of Creation is science. Deepening the mystery of the Self is spirituality. They are the two sides of the same coin. If neither Science nor Spirituality can create wonder and devotion in you, then you are in deep slumber.

Q: Guruji, I love you and I feel so much of love only thinking of your presence. And I feel complete and I don’t feel the need to come and talk to you. But my stupid and poor mind wants your attention when you are around and then gets trapped in stupid things, please guide.

Never mind! And yes come and talk to me. I know many questions are anyway stupid but never mind, just come and talk to me anything. See when our connection is much deeper, then just a little bit of talking doesn’t hurt at all. I don’t base my judgment on what you say, what you talk, not at all. You know in all these 56 years I have never said any bad thing about anybody, never once; have I? Anybody who knows me will know, I never do that. It is not that I did a great thing, it is in my nature, I can’t. If at all I say something negative about one person to somebody, if I feel they are getting entangled or it is not going to be good for them, then I say, ‘you know, he is not so focused’, that’s all I would say. ‘And this person is not suitable and he is not doing well and he is telling too many lies’, if he is telling lies only, otherwise I won’t say that. But I have not done any special thing to have this; this is just there from the beginning, nature. What I am saying is you don’t judge yourself too much, just be natural. If you just feel like saying hello or hi, just come and talk. And you if feel it is not needed then no need, okay. And don’t just keep these things, ‘oh, Guruji looked at that person and patted him on his back, he hugged that person, but he didn’t look at me’, these are all immaterial. Whether I look at you and say hi or no, we are all connected from a very deep level. How many of you feel that way? See, so many!

Acknowledging that one knows very little

Willingness to know

Q: Guruji, What should a person do to become the best in his profession?

To excel in your profession balance your life. Meditate every day, sleep well, and in the morning do pranayam and meditation and go to work with a fresh mind. Don’t watch too many movies and not more than one hour of television per day. A movie a week should be enough. This is because when our mind is bombarded with so many impressions, it loses its creative abilities and becomes uncreative. Spend one hour with people. Spend time with somebody whom you do not know.

Devotee Becomes God

When a river meets the ocean, the river no longer remains a river. It becomes the ocean. A drop of the ocean is part of the ocean. In the same way, the moment a devotee meets (surrenders to) the Divine, the devotee becomes GOD. When the river meets the ocean, it recognizes that it is the ocean from the beginning to the end. Similarly, the individual "IU IU" dissolves in ONE Divinity.

Question: What about backwaters?

Sri Sri: Sometimes the ocean goes into the river to greet it. Sometimes it seems that the ocean is pushing back the river. Similarly, the Divine puts many questions and doubts in the mind or gives an amazing experience to bring one back home.
