Q: The self is God. The empty space we experience in meditation, which is called the soul, is it also called the ego, or is it something in between the ego and the self? Please enlighten me on this.

Sri Sri Ravi Shankar:

Ego is that which needs somebody else to express itself. Ego needs two and there are many definitions of ego. One of the definitions of ego is, it is the antidote to being natural, and naturalness is the antidote to ego.

Second, on another level, there are three types of ego - Satvik, Rajasik and- Tamasik ego. Satvik ego is "I am everything" or "I am light", this is Satvik ego. Tamasik ego is "I am somebody", identifying with particular qualities.

Ego has many dimensions. When you say, "I am bothered by ego", you are bothered because there is some unnaturalness. You don’t feel at home, that is when ego is a botheration. When you feel at home, then you can say, "Oh that is Nirahankaar", i.e., no ego; being at ease. That which puts you at ease is egolessness. This is one of the definitions.

Gurudev Sri Sri Ravi Shankar
