Time

Time is of many different dimensions or layers. Time is the distance between two events, and space is the distance between two objects. This is one definition of time. There is a grand time or Mahakaala and it is the absolute Divine that is never changing.

If you go out from this terrestrial atmosphere to outer space, what will you experience there? There will be no sunrise and no sunset because sunrise and sunset, days, months, years are all limited to this space. But if you go beyond the Milky Way, there time stands still, yet time exists and it is called the Grand Time.

Q: I have a very nice person as my partner. I feel that I am not good enough for my partner and I am not fulfilling the expectations kept from me. Is marriage really made in heaven? Am I being cursed with love?
Sri Sri Ravi Shankar: You are wondering why you got married! It’s a little too late for that! It is better not to spend time regretting. Marriage is a compromise and you have to compromise. You know you have a very nice person as a partner. Just imagine what you would have done if you had had a very bad person as a partner. Now either you put the label on your partner that he or she is a bad person, or you put the label on yourself, it’s the same. If you put the label on yourself you are justifying your action by saying, 'Anyways I’m a bad person so I will keep doing what I’m doing, I don’t need to change'.
If you put the label ‘bad’ on your partner, you think he will never change. In either case it’s not going to work.
I once read a small story. After death a gentleman was departing and his dog came along with him. When they got to the gate marked 'Heaven', the guard said, 'Only you can come in, you cannot bring your pet in. Your dog is not allowed'. The man said, 'The dog has been so loyal to me, how can I leave him'. The guard said, 'In heaven dogs have no entry'. The man felt committed to the dog so he didn’t enter heaven and went further. Then they came to a gate with a board saying 'Hell' where they welcomed him. He asked if he could bring his dog with him and they said yes. He went in and the place was really heaven.
He thought, if this is heaven then what was that other gate? He was told that was hell! It was only to test and filter people to see whether they give up their commitment and not care for others, or they care for those who they are committed to. 'That is real hell and this is heaven. You have kept your commitment and so you are here'.
Do not think you are a bad person, change yourself. Why can’t you change yourself? Give up little things for the sake of your partner. I am not telling you to give up all the time, but at least sometimes. Then you will not label yourself as a bad person. If sometimes without your own knowledge some words come out of your mouth, or if you behave differently, don’t sit and regret. Just see it’s a dream and move forward. That’s why you should live in the moment with commitment, not just live in the moment.

Guru Mandala

Guru Mandala refers to the several circles (that you have to cross) before you reach the centre. It refers to the many attractions, many temptations, many repulsions and all that which makes you stronger. If you pass all that, you come to the center where you become really strong. Though you are in knowledge, many things come along which pull you in different directions and that is called Guru Mandala.

You know, small things can put you off. Someone comes to do a meditation course and the room is not okay, or the food is not okay for them. If you think that the food is not good and so I am not going to meditate, then you have missed the purpose of coming. Every day, anyway, you are eating.
At home you may be used to eating pancakes, but if not having pancakes takes the front seat and you miss out on your meditation, then you are stuck in Guru Mandala.

Similarly, you came for the purpose of meditation and you got stuck in conflict or you are upset with someone, then you have moved away from the goal, and you are caught up in the periphery. This is Guru Mandala.

In life, your aim is to achieve the highest knowledge, but in the process you get stuck with small insignificant things which distract you. These are the aspects of Guru Mandala.

Q: How can a person become a better meditator?
Sri Sri Ravi Shankar: See, there is no better or worse meditator. Just be in the present moment and be happy. Instead of continuously thinking, 'What can I get?' Think about, 'How can I contribute? How can I be useful for the society?'
There is a certain joy in getting. We often want that others should love and respect us and should always admire us. You should just drop all this and throw it out. Come out of this and think 'What can I do to contribute?' Then you will be happy and your meditation will also be deeper. Life becomes sweet and richer.
There is a joy in getting things. But joy also lies in giving. Have you seen your grandparents? Their joy lies in sharing more with their children and others around. A mother cooks so many different dishes for her children when they return home. Her joy is in feeding everyone. That is a more mature joy.
Somewhere in life we have to grow and evolve from the joy we get from grabbing and getting, to the joy of sharing and giving – which is that motherly joy, or grandmotherly joy. That is a more mature kind of joy.

Creativity

Creativity is what is common in both science and arts. One part of our brain (left brain) is for logic and the other part (right brain) is for music.
Now what is common to both of them? It is creativity, and creativity does not come when you are stressed out, but it comes out of centeredness. The more we are centered the more creativity spontaneously comes out of us.
So, if you are painter, I would suggest to you not to go on looking at other people's paintings. But instead listen to music. This idea may be completely revolutionary because most people who are painters are taught to only study the work of other painters. They are not told to listen to music. But I think that you should stop looking at other painting and listen to music, and then just take your brush and start painting.
When I was in school, I read so many poems written by others. I thought, 'Oh, I wanted to write but someone has already written about this'. So if you are a poet, then stop reading poems written by others. When I stopped reading poems written by others, then I started writing my own poems.
If you want to be a creative cook, then don't go on referring to cook books. You do your own experiments. If you want to be creative in cooking, never ever read any cook book. I think that this really works.
Another thing that is very important for creativity is intuition. You should become hollow and empty, and be centered to be intuitive and creative.
Intuition is also very important for any business man. When you invest based on your intuition then you are successful. For business you need intuition, for politics you need intuition, for creativity you need intuition, for discovery and science you need intuition. And for intuition what do you need? Meditation!

Q: How to act passionately after being trained to be dispassionate?

Sri Sri Ravi Shankar: You cannot create passion, when you love something it simply comes to you. You cannot ask me how do I love something, there is no way, no method.
Sometimes repetition might create an attachment but I wouldn’t say it is love. I have seen people who are fighting and when one person is not there anymore or has gone far away then one feels some sort of vacuum suddenly. Every day you are fighting with someone and suddenly that person is not there, what to do now? This is a sort of attachment, but passion that is something which cannot be cultivated, it just comes to you. Dispassion can be cultivated to some extent but compassion and passion cannot be cultivated.

Ram Navami

'Ra' in Sanskrit means 'That which is Radiant' and 'Ma' stands for 'Myself'. That which shines forth within me, is Rama. That which is radiant in every particle of the Being is Rama.
Rama is born to Dasharatha and Kaushalya. Dasharatha (In Sanskrit this means 'the ten charioted one') signifies the five organs of sense and the five organs of action. Kaushalya (Sanskrit for 'skilled') stands for skill. The skillful reiner of the ten chariots can give birth to Ram. When the ten are used skillfully, radiance is born within.
Rama was born in Ayodhya (Sanskrit for 'the place where no war can happen'). When there is no conflict in our mind, then the radiance can dawn. Lakshmana, the brother of Rama, was born of Sumitra Ö the good friend. When the ten are cooperating with you then Awareness is born.
Often we try to look for radiance within. Just realize that you are radiant. Once when Guruji was 5 or 6 years old, he closed his eyes and asked a visiting saint, 'Swamiji, I do not see any light'. The saint replied, 'You are the light! How can you see the light?'

Q: What is unconditional love and how can we love a person unconditionally, and when can we do that?

Sri Sri Ravi Shankar: When you don’t want anything inreturn, that is called unconditional love, not even a thanks or a sense of gratitude or gratefulness. A lot of times people help others but these little expectations are there and that is what bugs them and pulls them down. That is also a condition.

Unconditional love comes naturally as your consciousness blossoms. You can’t force it on yourself or cultivate it. I don’t know how to cultivate it. It’s simply a phenomenon. When your consciousness expands, rises, then, what comes out of it is unconditional love. You say, I’m here for you and I want nothing from you. This comes to you and it has come to you with some people but with many others, you have some expectations.

Signs of Intelligence

One of the characteristics of intelligence is being alert. You can’t say that I am intelligent but I am a little sleepy. So intelligence means alertness. Are you all alert now?
When we are alert what happens ? Our perception and our observation improves, and our expression becomes perfect.

Many times people say, 'Oh, nobody understands me'. Instead they should say, 'I haven’t been able to express myself'. If you have the skill to express (that comes from intelligence) then there can be no misunderstanding. So perception, observation and expression, all these comes from being alert.

Now if you keep yourself very alert for a longer period of time, what happens? You get tired and feel exhausted. So, it’s not in the nature of our brain to be alert all the time. So what we need is relaxation. Often the type of relaxation we know is taking a pillow and going to sleep, that's it. Sleep is necessary, but there is another type of relaxation where you are alert and at the same time relaxed.

It's like Sushi, i.e., the rice wrapped in seaweed. The seaweed is cold but the rice is hot (when you wrap it). In the same way, you have alertness and relaxation, and that is meditation.
So we have counted three aspects to intelligence:

1.Alertness
2.Proper perception & observation
3.Right expression

Efficiency and Creativity are another aspect of intelligence.

Another sign of intelligence is the ability to resolve conflict! Fools create conflicts in oneself and others. An intelligent person knows how to resolve conflicts in oneself and in the surrounding.
If someone is very creative but creates a lot of conflicts, you say, 'Oh my god, that's not intelligence', isn't it?

If you put an intelligent person between a conflict, will there be more conflict or will he reduce it? He will reduce or resolve it, isn't it! The tendency to bring harmony is a sign of intelligence. The ability to find a solution is sign of intelligence.

Another sign of intelligence is not getting stressed, and if you get stressed, to know how to get over stress. This is intelligence.

Intelligence is know how much to use our mind and our body, and not overusing it. If we overuse our mind and our body we get drained, exhausted and tired. Intelligence is walking the fine line of the middle path. That's what lord Buddha has said.

Q: When death is the ultimate truth of life, then why does one take the guidance of astrology?
Sri Sri Ravi Shankar: Are you asking this for yourself or for somebody else? If you are asking for yourself then just become aware that all of us are going to die, for sure. The important thing is that while we live, we shall be happy and have fun in all that we do.
While man is alive, he usually gets entangled in thinking, 'Oh, what will happen to me? What if there are some difficulties tomorrow? How will I be happy?'
This urges him to acquire wealth for a sense of security. The main aim of life is to be happy and comfortable with what we have, but often the path one takes brings misery instead of happiness. This is utter foolishness.
So what does an intelligent person do? An intelligent person knows for sure that God is with them, God loves them and belongs to them, so they don’t need to worry about anything. This feeling of deep faith gives them confidence. This is the secret of confidence. So they are able to do and achieve what they want.
See, if you are in the driving seat then you can turn the car in whichever direction you want, and spirituality gives you that strength to go where you want to. There is a saying, 'Ram jharoke baith sabka mujra le' (Meaning: Repose in the faith of the Divine and see everything as a passing event). So when the connection with the Divine happens, no matter where you are, you can achieve and get what you wish for. Whatever blessing you give starts to manifest. This is the great wealth of spiritual knowledge.
We have such great knowledge with us in this country but many people are not even aware of it. People go to the temple, just break a coconut, give money to the priest to perform Aarti (act of rotating the sacred lamp before the deity) and keep wondering on how to improve their life. They come back home and get stuck again in craving and aversion, criticizing others, belittling others, and getting entangled in feelings of jealousy and greed. They spend their whole life like that.
To improve your life you should find joy in spirituality. Once you find this joy, do not run away from your family responsibilities; stay at home and attend to your family responsibilities also. Balance both so that your spiritual life as well as your family life improves. This is such beautiful knowledge and this is what we must practice also.

Thursday, March 26, 2015

Q: In the Bhagavad Gita Lord Krishna says that among the months of the year I am the Margashirsha month (corresponding to the period from the third week of November to the third week of December). Please explain.

Sri Sri Ravi Shankar: See, in our country, every month of the calendar has been associated with some event and so each month has its own importance. There is also a special month called the Purushottama Maasa (literally meaning the month of Lord Vishnu) that is considered very special and important by the devotees of Lord Vishnu.

Devotees of Lord Shiva consider Shraavan to be most important. Devotees of the Mother Divine consider the months of Chaitra and Sharad (autumn) to be important. The festival of Navaratri is celebrated in the month of Sharad. So every month has its own significance and importance.

In our country we do not have a single school of thought or tradition when it comes to spirituality. There are so many sacred Puranas and scriptures, and each scripture prescribes something different and unique for each month of the year. But the essence of it all is that one should honour Time and give it due importance. Do not waste it unnecessarily on eating and drinking, or in useless gossip. The message is that Time is sacred. Consider time as a Prasaad (a sacred offering) from the Divine.

Q: You spoke about listening to the 'Anaahat Naad' in silence. But if I try to do that, I feel very awkward as if I have some disorder. Once when I told my doctor about this he said that I must be hearing things and that I have some mental illness.

Sri Sri Ravi Shankar: Relax in the sound that you hear from within. We try to fight with that inner sound, we try and get rid of it. Don’t do that, instead relax with a calm mind in the sound.

For example, the people in Mumbai and Delhi who have homes near the main road, or in New York have a home by the highway hear the sound of heavy vehicles 24 hours in a day. If you go stay there for one night after having stayed in the ashram, neither will you be able to sleep nor will you be at peace, because here you have become so used to sleeping in an quiet peaceful environment. Every five minutes you hear the sharp noise of a vehicle passing by, and not just that, you feel the vibrations also, as if it passing right over your head. Since we are not used to these sounds we keep fighting with them.

In foreign countries, if you have your home near the highway or some main road, then it is very difficult to get some peace there. You lose all your serenity. If someone new goes to live in such a place, they become very uncomfortable and lose their sleep. Without sleep, your entire body becomes shaky and you feel fearful. But those who have been staying there since a long time become habituated to the noise, so they do not have a problem sleeping despite the noise. They sleep very easily, snoring away the whole time, because they have gotten used to it. The same is with the people in Mumbai. Those who stay near the main road can hear a lot of noise in their house but since they have gotten used to it over time, they are not troubled by the noise.

Similarly a voice arises within us and we think we have some disease. We go to a psychiatrist who gives us a medicine which instead of resolving the problem creates another problem, making it worse than before. So all I am telling you, accept the subtle sound and relax in meditation. Just imagine that you are gently soaking into the sound. Accept it lovingly and you will see that everything will change.

Shraddha (Faith or Devotion)
Shraddha means loving the unknown. You know, you either love or do not love that which you already know about. Right? But if there is something you do not know, then you do not hate it, and you also have a choice to love it or not. Loving something which you have no idea about is called shraddha.
Shraddha brings you knowledge. It is very subtle. You have to catch this else it slips from your understanding. There is something that is unknown, and you love it. Andbecause of your love, you slowly start knowing it. Do you see what I am saying? Let us take a small example. Say there is some small ceremony or ritual being done, like how in the morning today we had the Rudrabhishekam. You do not know what it is, some mantras are being chanted and there is a Yajna happening, yet you simply love it and sit for it. Then you feel something, you experience certain vibrations arising during the pooja. How many of you have experienced this? (Many in the audience raise their hands) Similarly, you do not know what meditation is, but you start liking it and do it, and then you start knowing it. You feel, 'Oh wow, meditation is so good'.
So shraddha gives you more understanding, and more knowledge. If there is a resistance in you, then that is a lack of shraddha. It means that even before knowing something, you have a resistance to it. It is like putting a wall, thinking, 'I shall sit separately. I do not want to know this'. Then you cannot know it at all. When you say, 'I do not like it', then you also cannot know it. But when you think, 'Oh! There is something new, I love this', then loving the unknown is what is called shraddha. It is not even important that you understand it totally, yet its benefits surely come to you.

Q: Our horoscope is based on our birth time. If the birth time is unknown, does that mean our horoscope is wrong?

Sri Sri Ravi Shankar: If the timing is correct, interpretation is right. You can never say that it is 100% right. There is a probability of it being 80%-90% correct. And there is always an adrushya (invisible), i.e., an unknown influence. It can happen anytime and that is what is called grace. So grace has the ability to change anything at anytime.

 Shastras (scriptures) have their significance.

Like for instance, a boy was born and the father went to the astrologer to show his son's horoscope. The astrologer said that your son is very great. There will be many cars around him all the time around, and he will have the ability to stop anybody at anytime. So the parents thought that their son is going to become a big minister, or the president, and he will be surrounded by a fleet of cars but the son became a policeman. Today of course there are traffic lights which have come, but twenty years ago there were not as many traffic lights but only policemen who direct traffic. The father came and fought with the astrologer, 'You told me that my son will be surrounded by a fleet of cars, but he has become a policeman'. The astrologer said, 'See my prediction has come true even now. He is a traffic policeman and he is surrounded by many cars'. Another astrologer said to someone, 'You will be hit by a bullet in your head'. But what happened one day, the person was wearing a big hat and something did come, but it hit the hat and took the hat away. So there is a saying in Tamil, 'What came to head went off with my hat'. So a big trouble which would have come, by grace it went away in a small way. So here the scripture is also proved right, but at the same time you were in a right place at the right time.

Q: I feel like I live in two worlds, the Art of Living world and the rest. It is sometimes so difficult to combine the two. Could you comment on this?

Sri Sri Ravi Shankar: Good, be a bridge. You are the bridge, help people walk from here to there. It is a very short bridge.
