Uncertainty

You can be at ease with the uncertainty of the world when you realise the certainty of the consciousness. Often people do just the opposite. They are certain about the things in the world and uncertain about God. They rely on something that is not reliable and get upset. Uncertainty causes craving for stability and the most stable thing in the universe is our Self.

The world is of change, the Self is of non-change. You have to rely on the non-change and accept the change. If you are certain that everything is uncertain, then you are liberated. When you are uncertain in ignorance then you become worried and tense. Uncertainty with awareness brings higher states of consciousness and a smile.

Bharat says: A certain smile!!!

Often people think that certainty is freedom. If you feel that freedom when you are not certain then that is 'real' freedom. Often your certainty or uncertainty is based on the relative world. To be certain about the uncertainty of the relative, makes you certain about the existence of the absolute and brings a 'certain' faith in the absolute. Nitin says: Yes, to understand this you certainly need to have awareness!!!

Question : Can we still be enthusiastic when we are uncertain? Sri Sri : Yes, in knowledge you can be enthusiastic in uncertainty. Often people who are uncertain dont act, they simply sit and wait. Acting in uncertainty makes life a game, a challenge. Being in uncertainty is letting go. Certainty about the relative world creates dullness. Uncertainty about the Self creates fear. Uncertainty about matter brings certainty about consciousness.

QUESTION & ANSWER WITH GURUDEV

QUESTION & ANSWER WITH GURUDEV

Q: Can you tell us about Kali Yuga.

Sri Sri Ravi Shankar: There are four Yugas; time is divided into four aspects.
1. Satya Yuga, when there is a lot of positivity
2. Treta Yuga, when the positivity goes a little down
3. Dvapara Yuga, when the positivity goes a little more down, and
4. Kali Yuga, when positivity goes down even more
This is what is said about Kali Yuga. But I tell you, within Kali Yuga there is Satya Yuga.
The days when you feel happy, know that you are in Satya Yuga. And when you are totally miserable, you are in Kali Yuga.
In that sense, within the big Kali Yuga also, there are good times.

In a relationship, when one gets upset the other should keep quiet. Take turns to be upset. If both get upset at the same time, it becomes a big problem. And if you compete by saying, 'You got upset, now I will get more upset than you', then it becomes an even bigger problem.

Ego And Self From A Different Angle

Ego is that something, which has two aspects – the positive and the negative. The creativity in you – are the results of ego. At the same time, when you break down communication, when you isolate yourself, when you’re in tears, when you’re stressed – that is also ego. We do not know about the ego, and so we don’t pay much attention to it. But just 2-3 facts, awareness of how ego works !

The self – the basis of life! You can call it the spirit, the soul, consciousness, the source of the mind – anything. It is that something, which doesn’t change in one’s whole life. After discovering about all these levels, what is left is the Self.

Everything is changing, isn’t it? Do you notice this?

Just look at yourself in the mirror and then look at your picture taken a few months or a few years ago. Isn’t there a big difference?

Your body is changing, your thoughts are changing, the mind is changing, emotions are changing, situations are changing… But still you feel there is something in me which is not changing. So that something which is the basis of all change, that something through which you notice the change is the self – the atma, the spirit. It is the most amazing aspect of our lives. Just a glimpse of it, a dip into your spirit energizes our whole system – and that is what meditation is.

Spirituality is the skill of nurturing, purifying and blossoming one’s all levels of existence.

QUESTION & ANSWER WITH GURUDEV

QUESTION & ANSWER WITH GURUDEV
POSTED ON: FRIDAY, DECEMBER 31, 2021

Q: Dear Gurudev, is this the only path that leads to supreme peace and happiness?

Sri Sri: : If you ask me that water is the only answer to quench your thirst, what can I say? What can I say if you ask me if breathing is the only way to fill the lungs? Any path which leads you to inner peace, tranquillity, joy and love is the path. All paths are essentially just one. The methods may be many.
Someone may instruct you, ‘Do Pranayama like this’. Someone else may instruct you in a different way saying, ‘Do Pranayama like this’. Someone may ask you to not do it at all. So there are many different ways.
What we have seen over the years is that these techniques (taught by The Art of Living) are suitable for this age, for our generation and the people. It is a time tested thing and everyone is comfortable with this.
You see, in the past, people did not have much to do. They would throw the seeds in the field and would simply sit to watch them grow. They would keep watch to ensure that the birds do not destroy their crop. So they had time, and they could meditate for eight hours or so. But it is not necessary for you to meditate for eight hours every day. Just do the Sudarshan Kriya for ten minutes every day, that is good.
Some people attend the Vipassana Meditation course for ten days, where they watch the breath for ten days, and then finally at the end of the ten days, they feel some sensations in the body. You can feel the same sensations in those ten minutes of doing the Sudarshan Kriya also. It is you choice whether you want to sit for eight to ten days to discover that there is sensation in your body; or that your body is hollow and empty. I am not saying that it is bad or anything of that sort. Everything has its own value.

When you observe silence in the four or five days of the Advanced Course and do different meditations, and then when you stand up to do Yoga and Pranayama, it increases the circulation and energizes the body. It also brings experiences along with it.
Luckily in The Art of Living, we have all the avenues open (for one to go deep within). We have the knowledge, we have the devotional aspect in the Narada Bhakti Sutras (A commentary on the Aphorisms of Love by Sage Narada); then we have the intellectual inquiry and stimulant in the Ashtavakra Gita. We have the knowledge of Yoga through the Patanjali Yoga Sutras. So it is complete from all aspects: for our awareness, our well-being, and it is also very scientific.

I believe we should go ahead in a scientific manner and not by blind faith. That is the speciality of The Art of the Living. People usually fast without any scientific understanding about fasting. They usually fast all day and then eat heavy at night. Or they fast all day, and break it by eating fried food.
During Navratri, many Hindus usually fast and eat only fried potato (chips or wafers), sweets, etc. Eating sweets is still okay, but having fried potatoes during fast is no good. In South India, people say it is okay to have idlis (fermented and steamed rice cakes), but not rice itself. It is okay to eat puffed rice like in Avalaki, but they would also eat other things with it. It is the wrong method of fasting.
The Muslims too fast the entire day and then in the evening at the time of breaking the fast, they eat a lot. It is so jarring to the system (body) and it is a very unscientific way of fasting. We should always follow science here. Fasting is good, but you should follow a scientific way of doing it. Have juices, and fruits during fast. When you have to come out of your fast, you must come out of it very gently (meaning, without taxing the body that is cleansed through the fast). Then it is good for both the body and the mind.

Negativity needs an anchor

Negativity cannot remain without a support. Positivity, happiness can be without any reason. The mind goes on trying to find support for its negativity. It looks for a hook to hang its negativity on - if not this person, then that thing or that person and so on. This perpetuates the maya! The creeper of negativity needs a support in order to grow. But negativity or aversion for even one person can guarantee a one-way ticket to hell - you need nothing else! All negativity is a pointer to move to the centre and broaden the vision to the cosmic intelligence. Instead of focussing your attention on support for your negativity, look at the seed of negativity. With meditation, silence, kriya, the source of negativity is nipped at the root.

QUESTION & ANSWER WITH GURUDEV

QUESTION & ANSWER WITH GURUDEV
POSTED ON: THURSDAY, DECEMBER 30, 2021

Q: Gurudev, it is said that the actual matter in our body can be contained in a match box, and the rest is just empty space. Can you please explain the phenomena of levitation in this context?

Sri Sri: When you want to stand up, what do you do? Your whole body is on the ground. It is when your mind says to the body, ‘Okay, now get up’, this whole mass of 65 to 70 kilos gets up and starts walking. You take the support of your toes and you walk by taking support of your toes. That is how your body is lifted up. So how is it happening? It all begins with a single thought in the mind, in the consciousness.

So when the mind becomes very coherent, it can lift the body with a single thought. But I tell you, I have not seen anybody who has levitated and suspended their body in air. Yes, the body is lifted off the ground. Many people have experienced this bit. But I have not seen anyone who has started floating in the air.

Drop your self image

Kashiap : "How do you make everyone happy?"

Guruji : "Become me."

Rama : "How do we become you?"

What stands between you and me is your self image. Your self image restricts you from being me. Self image whether good or bad causes misery.

When you think good about yourself in a very subtle manner you think bad about others. Then anger, jealousy, hatred - everything follows.

When you think bad about yourself you feel low and again you start getting angry and you hate everyone else. If you think good about yourself you are in trouble and when you think bad about yourself you are in greater trouble.

So drop your self image.
